From memory (still vivid) -
Fended off langdon with his left arm, chest mark one-handed with the right. 50m out straight in front Heatley Stand end. Ran back, didn't take any time because he thought he took too long the week before. Went forth and drilled it straight through the middle post height to kick the winner. Act of a true champion to bounce back after the embarrassment of the previous round.

I was under Heatley stand that game, one of the best finishes to a game ive seen.

From memory Welsh goaled to get us within a kick and then Sticks converted from 50 to seal it. A real pressure goal and a perfect way to slam all those critics from the week before.

and Sticks was instantly back to being the legend he was.

Based on a thread in BigFooty, one of the Blueseum writers is putting together a top 15-20 games of the 1990's from Carlton's perspective. Generally they are close wins, but of course there's some smashings in there. The question relates to our barnstorming win against the Hawks in 1993, the week after Sticks put the ball out of bounds on the full to maintain the draw with Essendon*. http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... +3%2C+1993 It has been suggested that Sticks kicked the last goal of the match to take the game from the Hawks. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know who else kicked any of the 5 goals in the last quarter, and in what order, to take this game?

can't recall the other goal kickers, but pretty sure Kernahan's was the last goal of the game. From memeory there was still about 2 min left after he kicked it.

On a good night to be a Verbeek yes it was just as you said. I remember the commentator made the point about taking too long the week before. We were running out of time (as CK notes) and still needed another goal to win it. Rohan Welsh scored the winner - a set shot from in front of the Social Club. I'm not certain but I think Sticks got it to him. Any other recollections? Corrections?

Ok, as a sticks obsessed person let me set a few things straight - the goal you are thinking of was at 1/4 time and was actually after the siren - such poetic justice that a week after the bumbers game he had a chance to redeem himself. dead in front but 50 out he put it through and was pumped up. The match winner came from a goal in the forward pocket near the race, this was the one where he pushed langford (I think) and marked it, from memory he played on and drilled it while Langford was protesting (it was a little bit of a nudge). edit: now that I think of it the above goal was his second last goal of the game, match winner was a set shot further out - but I still think the significant goal was the one after the siren at 1/4 time. Enormous pressure considering the week he had. Jars - highlights of this are on the video I sent you - the review of the 93' season (I think).

Welsh goaled to get us in with a shot, then Sticks drilled a beauty from 50 to put us in front with about 2min to go. He took the kick quickly as no one knew how much time was left due to it being a long quarter. (Over 30min from memory) When Sticks put us in front the crowd went mental; people were high-fiving and hugging each other even though they had never met before, it was a fantastic feeling being there!!! One of the loudest roars I had ever heard at PP. The worst part was how nervous everyone was for the last 2 minutes, while we were trying to waste time, as the Dawks had our measure for most of the game that day. We held them off though, and Sticks was instantly back to being the legend he was.

Watching highlights of the footage on the news (interstate) I recall thinking that I hadn't previously seen the terraces behind the goal go as wild as they did after that goal. Brilliant!

From the Bluesuem sorry, what I was saying was his goal on the siren at 1/4 time was more significant, it was 50 metres out (approx), the Langford goal was one of the ones in the last 1/4,

Langford being the opponent added to the goal's significance as he was the best fullback in the comp at the time and sticks had some epics against him.
