On the subject of interviews I have a copy of probably the only interview of reasonable length I can recall with Bruce Doull, done in 1987. It was done for a magazine called Footy Week that was a very reasonable and analytical football mag but unfortunately only lasted that year. Doully was upbeat about our premiership chances for that year and as it turned out he was right (no surprise there). I'm not sure interviews are the sort of thing the Blueseum collects but if so feel free to contact me via email and I can get it scanned and pass on Why this country cannot produce a reasonable footy weekly mag is a surprise to me. English football has many, and while their market is a lot bigger, it seems surprising that we cannot support at least one decent magazine. |

I'll be coincidentally putting up a fair bit of stuff on Bruce next in the Scrapbook. I'm not sure if Jars and Molsey are around at this time of year; but I'm sure they'll get to see your post. BTW....I have many issues of Footyweek which was published for quite a few years going right back to 1968-69 by ex Umpire Harry Beitzel....

Just thinking......Bruce retired in 1986, so the interview you speak of must have been in 1986....not 1987. |

I wouldn't mind being able to access anything aside from the Record here in Harbourtown ..

Royal Parade, Sounds like an interesting article. I would be interested in seeing a copy. Hopefully the guys from the Blueseum get in contact with you and put it on his link in the Blueseum. |

Just checking things, and I found that Harry Beitzel edited Footy Week 1965-71; and it's ownership is a bit confusing after that. "Football identity Harry Beitzel produced a weekly eight-page newspaper, Footy Week, filled with match reports and statistics. It was distributed free to clients of Spotless Dry Cleaners, and later to customers of Caltex Service Stations in Melbourne. In August 1971, Beitzel saw commercial possibilities of expanding his Footy Week publication, to embrace other sports. His brother, Vic Beitzel, was 'Peeping Pete', a racing commentator on Melbourne radio station 3UZ (later Sport 927). On August 1, 1971, the first copy of Sunday Sport was distributed across Melbourne through the network of milk bars distributing the Sunday Review. Sunday News was launched on September 27, 1971. Distribution Manager Ray Young wrote to distributors: "It is Harry Beitzel's wish that all Supervisors employ at least six to eight boys for sales on major intersections in their area." Sunday News lasted 26 weeks, with Beitzel losing $205,000. He later falsely claimed he "paid back every cent". Beitzel later served a jail term for financial dishonesty offences, when he was employed in a PR role with the Soccerpools lotteries" |

Interview definitely 1987, first year of Doully's retirement. I'll have to dig it out now. I read the original when it came out and regretted not keeping it, so when I was in Melbourne I accessed the magazine from the State Library and took a copy of the interview. I did keep one copy of Footy Week, the 1987 Premiership edition! I think it is a different mag from the earlier Betziel one? I know that Inside Football exists, but compared to say the English Football mags the quality and depth of reporting is shallow IMHO........ |

That's great mate!......would love to see it if poss......and a great addition to the Blueseum I'm sure. I thought I had every publication covering those days....but I can't find it. The entire Mag. industry is stuffed since the advent of the net; and we haven't the population as in Europe to warrant a class footy mag unfortunately... ..60 million people in the U.K. alone. |

David Parkin would be amazed. He often states that he never heard Doull speak! 
He tells a great story about a pre season game in the 80s that he coached. According to Parko (who has the ability to exaggerate the facts) , he fielded a very young side in this particular game and as the players were about to run out, someone asked who would be captain.
Parkin quickly scanned through the group to look for an experienced player. His eyes met Bruce Doulls. Doull looked horrified at the thought, slowly shook his head "no" and gave Parko the glare. Needless to say, Bruce was'nt captain that night. |

I've dug the Doull interview out and will pass it on to Jarusa and Warby during the week. Mostly focuses on what he was doing post football and his view of the 1987 Carlton team. Footy Week can be accessed from the State Library of Victoria. It only came out in 1987 (I'm not talking about the earlier mag with the same name) - I suspect there will be some good Carlton articles there for whoever wants to do the research..... |
