Without visiting the Blueseum ( ) from memory Michael Aitken was recruited from Perth (not sure which club) he was a Doctor and he played only one game for Carlton against Footscray at Western Oval back in 86 or 87 (about 187cm) - he was probably too short to play KP and a little slow to be a flanker type.

No relation to Ian Aitken.

I think you'll find he was a doctor who we gave to the bears as one of the players we had to give them. No relation.

Electric Blue, why are the names highlighted?

A few of the players not highlighted were damn good players who were better off at other clubs (with more senior opportunity available to them. But then again why would they give up the honour to play in the Dark Navy Blue jumper.

The '86 team was outstanding.

Outstanding depth. Not only that, from these lists you can see the importance of 10 year players, and seeing names of future stars doing their apprenticeships in the twos in the dark navy blue jumper' sense of belonging.

Bring back the reserves. In a couple of years our own reserves team will have plenty of future stars listed and a few seasoned bodies guiding the way for our up and coming youth.

One of the worst selection decisions in hindsight was not to play SOS in 1986 GF -killed them in the reserves GF game and whilst still very young would have Been more than handy in the big one
As for Michael Aitken dominatedin the reserves in that year but regrettably we had a number of guys his size AND DIDNT GET THE OPPORTUNITIES he should have

The Bears had to get ?3 players from each team. We gave michael Aitken as one, and he promptly retired.

The other 2 according to the Blueseum were Neil Gaghan and Peter Kenny , although Mick Kennedy is also listed as going to the Bears for 1987.

Mick Kennedy can't be right as he played in the 1987 GF. I think he went to the Swans later in his career.

Mark Buckley went to Brisbane fairly early in their life, maybe he has been confused with Mick Kennedy?

Wow that 86 side in particular was awesome, no wonder we were so strong in 86,87,88. Makes you wonder how we slid so far in the late 80's early 90's with some of the younger guys coming through, Silvagni, Hanna, Brown, Gleeson, Phillips, O'sullivan etc.

I'm pretty sure that the three players that we "gave" Brisbane were:

- Peter Kenny
- Michael Aitken
- Bruce Reid


Neil Gaghan, Mark Buckley and I think Stuart Glasscott (David's brother) went up to Brisbane at later stages to play senior games.

Question...in our trophy cabinet we have possession of the 1986 Army Reserve Trophy. It has tiny plaques on it which have the previous years winners, yet stops at 'Carlton F.C 1986', which leads me to believe there was only one of these trophies in existence. But if my memory serves me correctly - the Army Reserve kept sponsoring the Reserves competition after 1986...(pretty sure we won it in '91 with David Glascott as Captain?)

Anyway - it's just one of the many interesting trophies we have in the trophy cabinet which is on display for all to see...although when I was at George Harris' funeral yesterday - i did sneak downstairs to check on one thing and although it's pretty tight...we do have room for one more premiership cup - but we'll have to squeeze them all together on that bottom row. It's something St Kilda never have to worry about!

Agro, good point. The Aitken biography indicates that Aitken and Reid were given to Brisbane, and Brisbane complained. The biography indicates only 2 players were handed over.

The Gaghan biography also indicates that Gaghan was sent to Brisbane by the Blues, making a third.

Will check with the site historian to try to clarify this across each of the biographies.
