pejorative crap. - we are not talking about your time in some country/suburban league in the dim dark past, but the big league - the AFL. He towled you up in every important game he played on you, every one. You couldnt handle him, or (as we have discovered) the pressure. Damn right he had your measure, he had your measure when it counted.

Go gracefully Gary, please, but just go.

Not only did SOS usually have his measure, but SOS didn't go out on a drug binge with a young girl who ended up six feet under.

Ablett is not very loving of Craig Kelly or Lyon either.

He doesn't seem to like too many people really except Blight, cos he let him train only 2 times in the lead up to Christmas.

Fair comment, I thought. In a fair contest, SOS was slow as a wet week... But that's what makes full back of the century - you figure out how to get around that. I still love pointing that out to opposition supporters.

Any defender to have ever played the game would be in need of a miner's helmet against Gazza in his prime. Big statement, but I'm prepared to wear it.

I also agree that Ablett's mark was not a mark.. but I also think that SOS's grab was not held and shouldn't have been paid too.

..... and how would Gary "Renton" Ablett go on SOS if SOS was playing at fullforward.

When SoS retired Carey, Plugger and hird all came out and said he was the hardest player to play on. I remember Ablett in an article when he was about to retire to drugs stating his most feared opponents and he didnt even mention sos amongst 5 or 6 players. Clearly SOS has his measure and he knew it.

Hmm, just going into my extensive reference library to check on the result of that game, hang on a minute, lick o' paint, checking - nearly there, here we go - the winner of that game was Hawthorn.

And I'm sure like Maurice Rioli and Nathan Buckley the Norm Smith Medal that Ablett won in that game has pride of place - in Ablett's case probably some pawn broker has it by now.

SOS certainly wasn't quick and getting him on a quick lead was the best way to beat him, but I don't even think this is what Ablett is talking about.

He means being able to lose him over the ground.

SOS played on Hird a number of times in the late 90's and was able to follow him into the midfield and keep up.

Here's a thought Gary, if you thought you could exploit SOS at half-forward, why didn't you take a little wander up that way in the 95 GF and get yourself into the game?

Surely you weren't that goal hungry you were scared to be more than 50m from goal?

Was it the fact you knew SOS was just as effective at half-back, as he was at full-back? I know your coach probably didn't want to bring SOS into the game by instructing you to move to half forward.

Many, Many games he won off his own boot - but don't take my word for it - ask his peers...and 85% of them say "Greatest Player I ever saw"...leave the personal stuff out - the guy was a magician...I was at the 89 GF and it was simply outstanding as was the performance against Essendon* 4 years later - as was....i really could go on...

...in defence of Ablett - those who saw the delivery into the forward line by Geelong that day in 1995 would agree that it was woeful and SOS really didn't have a great deal of work to do!

Ah...the preciousness of Carlton supporters...

He can say what he wants. I don't want to trawl through the Kouta thread but I'd like to see who the people who rubbished Kouta's right to speak are and whether they're the people who are rubbishing Ablett.

If Gary ever played on me while I was playing at fullforward I could have made Gary extra sponsorship money for the day. Gary could have had "Baileys" stuck on his back because I would have been using Gary as a ladder to take screamers all day.

i'm not rubbishing abblett, i've stuck up for him more than once in here.
he had so much talent it was a joke.

but he's way off the mark saying he had sos's measure.

and i stand by what i said about him not being a big game player. (except for when geelong lost the GF in 89)

he may have won 100 games off his own boot, but i don't remember any of them being finals
