1983 Elimination Final

Saturday, 3rd September 1983
Carlton 3.3 8.4 11.7 12.9 (81)
Essendon* 4.3 7.5 14.5 17.12 (114)

It was a dark day for the Navy Blues - The reigning premiers had overcome a sluggish start to the season winning 6 in a row on the way to scraping into the 5. In R22 Essendon* thumped us by 55 points at Waverley and a Fitzroy win over Collingwood the week before ensured that we would finish only 5th and have to back up against the Bombers at Waverly again in the Elimination Final. We fared a little better but still went down bu 33 points.

The supporters and the faithful were shocked. We had just won back to back flags and were now unceremoniously dumped by Essendon* (remembering that there was no Essendon* for most of the 70's and early 80's)

As a group we prayed for a miracle- a saviour to redeem us from the ignominy. We cried to the heavens and the lord did heed our prayers:

For only 5 days later (8th September) the Judd child was born.

Anyone know how the planets aligned that day? Was it a blood-moon by any chance?

I remember that game, Tony Buhagiar ripped Bruce Doulls headband off and threw it into the crowd, Bruce stayed calm and once the ball left the area he reached into his sock and pulled out a spare headband.....

Just like Magilla Gorilla was Bruce..

Realy enforced m,y deep hatred for Essendon* that day.....

Buhagiar = arrogant prick. imagine thinking he could upset BD. what a fool. played school footy against him in perth early 70s - even bigger tosser than peter spencer.

these guys had seriously big heads, even way back then.

playing against aquinas in 73 i had the pleasure of knocking spencer out

Not as a bigger head then Gerard Neesham,ha ha you knocking spencer, where was Ron Boucher playing those days.

I'm suprised he never played in the VFL along with Stan Nowotny,Tom Mullooly and Stephen Michaels.

I think I'll become religious now.

In fact, I remember getting down on my knees and asking God after that game, "Oh Lord, bring us thy Judd."

And he answered with: "My son, you have been a good teenager, I will not only bring thy JUDD I will also give thy RUDD."

"As long as he's not a DUDD, dear Lord."

And God replied in His infinite wisdom, "No problem, BUDD!"

I lost 40c in primary school betting on Carlton against Essendon* two weeks running. I'm still scarred over it, could have purchased a nice pack of chickadees with that money
