Who would you play at our three key defenders in Round 1 2008, assuming a fully fit list?

Short list would probably comprise...

Thornton
Jamison
Setanta
Bower
Saddington
Waite
Austin

Jamison at FB - showed a bit at the end of this year. Good pace, has an ability to keep up with forwards on leads.

Setanta at CHB - they need to find a position for him, and leave him there, and I think CHB could be it. Can be creative, give run, and doesn't need to be as 'precise' with his football smarts (eg on a leading full forward) as he does at FB.

Thornton on third tall.

We need Waite at CHF now that Kennedy and Whitnall are gone.

Ditto

If Bower can step up this year we may be able to release the reliable and quick Walker into the midfield.

Jamison's youth should get him a start in front of Saddo who is simply back up IMO.

Setanta must be played down back all year.

Thornton must take the other tall and ATM, the best or second best of them.

Austin will hopefully force his way into the side.

Bower I reckon, committed and attacking. Thornton better watch himself for next year, his attitude better get better. Sick of him getting pissed off at everyone. No to Saddington he can stay in the bullants. Offers jack. Jamison, Setanta, Thornton and Bower. Hopefully Anderson & Bower for the quick smalls.

Since we are playing Richmond we don't need much height.

Setanta on Richo.

Thornton on other tall.

Walker on Delidio.

Anderson on Brown.

Hadley on Pettifer.

Game over!!

I think we should develop Setanta to be our CHB. If he can improve his footskills he would be ideal.

As for FB, I'd rotate it between Thornton and Jamison. I wouldn't throw Jamo straight into the deep end, and would probably get Thornton to play on blokes like Lloyd and such, and allow Jamo to cut his teeth with lesser FFs to help his development and confidence before we give him the big jobs.

Last time I looked there are only 2 key defensive positions

The ability to spoil is an art form so Jamo is a must as he is clearly our best defensive spoiler.

T-Bird adds the Flair, calmness and ability to create as a third tall on a less dangerous opponent that we could expose.

Waite would be my starter for CHB. Has to own it this year.

In reserve Carlos to play full back, if we though Waite forward.

If Hartlett looks good in the pre-season practice games I'd find a place for him in defence.

I agree, to be a good forward Waite needs to either kick goals or set them up which he struggles to do.

In defence his lack of skill/smarts isn't such a hinderance and his athleticism can negate opponents.

Round 1 isn't as important as round 22.
Hopefully by then Thornton will have been surpassed by the likes of Bower, Jamison and Austin.

The young guys should all be regulars while Thornton assumes the vc position in the bullants.

He is ordinary and his onfield crap behaviour is far more frequent than Fev's, but receives only half the amount of coverage.

Carlos should play either FB or CHB depending on the opponent, with emphasis on CHB where he can run off and create.

Bower to have first crack ahead of Saddington.
Jamison in preference to Thornton despite the lack of experience, which could be helped by getting Walker, Gibbs, Grigg, Hadley, Houlihan, Scotland, etc back to help out.
(hopefully Houla can spend more time forward).

Round 1 - Carlos, Bower, Thornton/Jamison.

Hoping that Thornton's days are numbered unless he really pulls his finger out.

Is Jamison still a rookie?

Yeah - but he is the nominated rookie and from what I understand means he can play without there being a LTI.

My choices would be:

Jamo, Thornton, Carlos as definites to play the whole season down back.

Waite is a tough one and can play either forward or back, but wherever he is chosen to play, I want him to play the whole season there so that he can settle in a position.

Hartlett definitely not to play as a defender.

My prediction is that our points allowed will be in the bottom 6 this year (ie have one of the 6th best defenses) due to development of the younger guys and the increased pressure of the midfield and decreased inside 50's the opposition will get.

My starting back six would be

Ando Carlos Jamo
Tex Austin T-Bird

...need a moniker for Austin
