Post subject:  From the Blueseum: An unknown Carlton MBE uncovered

The Carlton Football Club and Blueseum has recently become aware of a past player, John 'Jack' Massey, being recognised as an MBE for services in wartime and to society. The find is a big coup for the Club, and the site, as until recently Massey was listed as 'Jack' but now his full name - John Tolson Massey, and his photo (provided by family) is included in our archives:

We have received some correspondence suggesting other players have been given an MBE for services to sport.

Can anyone assist on this point?

Looks like post 1975 a player would have received an Order of Australia, as opposed to an MBE???

http://www.theorderofaustralia.asn.au/index.php

Quote:
The Order of Australia, instituted by Her Majesty The Queen on 14 February 1975, was established as "an Australian society of honour for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service".

No joy via this link, but I'm not certain if it is a comprehensive listing...

Maybe you could fire off a question here???

Dont know about MBE's but we certainly had our share of KBE's as members of our football club:

- Sir Robert Menzies (number 1 ticket holder and Prime Minister)
- Sir Kenneth Luke (President of Carlton and VFL and founder of VFL Park)
- Sir Leo Curtis (former Lord Mayor)
- Sir Maurice Nathan (President of the VFL before Allan Aylett).
- Sir Redmond Barry (judge who sentenced Ned Kelly to hang).

I am sure there were a few others as well - I dont think even Melbourne Football Club would have had as many KBE's. 8)
