According to an item on the AFL's website this match has been upgraded [not a term I'd use] to a 'Reserved Seat Ticket' match.

Everyone attending will require a Carlton season reserved seat or Ticketmaster7 reserved seat ticket. The only exception to this will be Carlton Football Club Silver Members - Social Club, who will be able to scan in using their Membership Card and sit in a designated area on level 1. A limited amount of guest passes will be available for this match for this Membership category only.

Level 3 reserved seat tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster7 agencies, by phoning 1300 136 122 or online.

Meanwhile the 80,000 capacity MCG will be empty.
Remember all the BS the AFL came out with about transferring games when Docklands was first built?
What a con job that was!

What a joke! The club and the AFL have sucessfully pulled the wool over all CFC supporters eyes.

The MCG is being used for Hawthorn v Melbourne on the Saturday (lucky to get 40k) and on the Sunday by Collingwood v Richmond (which is fair enough).

The Hawthorn game should be swapped for our game.

Later in the year we are scheduled to play both Femantle and port at the MCG. What happened to matching the game to the venue?

Great scheduling again by the masters at the AFL.

Agreed. That's why I queried the use of the term 'upgraded' to described what's happened to the game.

Unless one or the other team totally drop their form I predict that the following will be similiarly 'upgraded':
15 Jul -v St Kilda (our away match)
31 Jul - v Richmond (home)
28 Aug - v North (home)

Do the AFL really make that much more money by forcing these situations?

What is the equivalent crowd at the MCG that would produce similar incomes?

The thing that irks me the most is the booking fee.

Can somebody please tell me why the booking fee is $5.80 for adults and $1.50 for kids?

A booking fee.

Are children's tickets somehow less work to print? Are they smaller? Do they weigh less?

No. This to me is proof that it is a levied charge for seating disguised as a booking fee.

It's a complete con. Mr Samuel, step up to the plate.

I think ticketmaster make all the money. If it's not fully ticketed you can just scan your card and sit anywhere on level 3 for no extra charge. Now you have to pay ticketmaster $5.80 for the same privilege!

I'm pretty sure the clubs make more in gate takings in fully ticketed matches. If it was just a Ticketmaster bonus then why wouldn't every game be fully ticketed?

It's easy to fly off the handle about these things...but 3 points should be made.

1. Ticketed matches increase the number of seats available by ensuring all seats are filled.

2. This game will draw more people at Telstra Dome on a cold night than it would at the MCG. People love TD.

3. Carlton's home gound is Telstra Dome, and if last week's crowd is any indication, Carlton people are supporting the move with their feet.

There's some evidence that the ticketing reduces attendance. People who have booked don't turn up (are sick, have to work, a conflict comes up, etc) and the League and the ground manager can't give that seat to someone else.

As an example, this is from a Herald-Sun article of April last year:

The Collingwood-Richmond match last Friday, also fully ticketed, was sold out but the crowd of 55,622 was well below the declared capacity of 67,000.

The MCC said almost 5,000 people with public reserved seats -- mainly Richmond and Collingwood members -- had not turned up.

More than 1,200 AFL members who had reserved seats didn't attend.

The ANZAC Day Blockbuster/fully-ticketed match a few weeks later had the same problem - a lot of ticketed no shows.

The biggest H&A attendance last year was our round 22 match against Collingwood. It wasn't billed as a blockbuster, it wasn't fully-ticketed, and a lot of seats were available on the day for walk-up.

Any "fully ticketed" match sends out an advance warning that it's going to be a big crowd, which means a possible shit fight, and then people opt to stay away.

The biggest crowds are always a surprise, i.e. Carlton vs Hawthorn - biggest crowd of the round, with no prior fanfare that it's going to be the "match of the year" or any crap like that.
