Good read.

They forgot about the white anting that went on before hand that primed everyone (Donald McDonald may not have revealed all).

Clarkson

Excellent article. The bit at the end quoting Aitken's attitude about not wanting an apology says a lot for how Clarkson is probably still regarded by many; especially at our club.

Given Clarkson's outbusrts this year with the media, it would appear that not much has changed.

Really great piece by Connolly, a fantastic read.

I still hate Clarkson because of that game.

A good read.

Was living in London at the time and went to that game.

An absolute dog act for what started out by the Carlton boys as a holiday game.

Aaaahhhh...those were the days.

Love that smack by Dom on Clarkson. Wouldn't mind him doing it again either.

I remember watching that game at the time and just being stunned by what was going on. It's not like there wasn't similar happening during the normal season (Muir, Balme, Ditterich etc weren't long gone and Rhys and Diesel were still around) but it just didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense considering the match wasn't anything other than a junket.

Surreal.

Clarkson should have been charged with assault.

At least the equal, if not worse, than Lethal's attack on Bruns.

Certainly was a bolt out of the blue wasn't it.

hilarious bit was watching Dominator and Rhys chase him all over the field. He could run but couldn't hide.

Have to give him credit for his work in the coaches box but gee he was a dog on the ground and not just this game either.

Great read, and another Tony De Bolfo initiative.

He was looking for footage of the game and I couldn't find it on youtube. Thanks for the link!

Not many people remember that Ian Aitken won the VFL's Best First Year Player in 1987 (equivalent of the NAB RISING STAR AWARD TODAY).

He was never the same footballer again after Clarkson's cowardly attack.

Its an interesting side note that Aitken actually got his start as a senior footballer in an end of season match the previous year playing on Jason Dunstall and doing very well on him (this match was either in Toronto or Tokyo) - that got our Match Committee thinking they had found a player.

So Aitken started his career on a post season junket game and essentially had his career finished by a post season junket game.

Gets me angry all over again reading that - Lets never forget the dog act of Clarkson, I think he should always face more vitriol at Carlton games and perhaps feel a little more nervous walking out to the huddle - coward of a man, should have just been taken off the ground.

Sounds like he doesn't really regret it either, destroyed Aitkens career and all he can say is "it made me as a footballer" (or words to that effect).

I look forward to dancing on Norf Melbournes grave when they go up to the gold coast - shove the shinboner bullshit up your arse

Great read and I too loved the hit Dom put on the little dog.

Rhys certaintly made anyone who hit him back away once he stood back up

I was born in our premiership year (1987) so that's the first Iheard of this story. Clarkson is a dog and will never taste success. He will be getting my boo's from now on!

Donald McDonald must be a bit like Rhys with serious white line fever. He comes across as such a likeable, easygoing chap.

Clarkson on the other hand...

Love how Connolly throws this in for all the youngsters out there.

I've always hated Clarkson for this...and I don't think the boys went hard enough at him...they should have at least broken his jaw. Aitken was never the same again - his jaw had to be wired and I'm sure he forever heard footsteps...though who could blame him.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, Alistair.

It was actually the second time Aitken's jaw had been broken in his short career. It must have been shattering for his confidence on the field.
