Just wondering how many of the informed posters who believed our season was over last week, will have the guts to defend their position this week?
Come on. You know who you are!
I'll come out and defend everything I've said. The team that played tonight will not win many games playing the style they played with the skill errors they had. Better teams than the Dorks will smash us into the ground.
Tonight was a disgrace for the most part of it (be both teams). Only players like Waite and Teague tried to stand up, but they missed sitters when they had to take them too.
4 points is great, but even Richmond will put us away with another performance like that.
Let's hope this win gives them the confidence they desperately need to back themselves and go forward and actually play 3/4 of the game in a useful, game winning level.
Until then, I'll continue to be frustrated and annoyed, and I'll bet other people will too.
I'll agree with all of that.
The first three quarters were about as bad as it gets. The fact that I still felt we were a chance to win if we could just put together 10-15 minutes of pre-season form says much about how highly I rate this side AT ITS BEST.
Problem is, sides at Carlton's stage of evolution don't play finals if they can't regularly produce their best and other than the last quarters against Essendon* and Hawthorn (neither of whom I expect to make the 8 ) we've shown stuff all.
I think I probably rate the talent of this team higher than most. I didn't think the pre-season comp was a joke or fluff or whatever. I actually think what was on display there was a side that was starting to understand just how good it could be if it got its shit together.
Unfortunately the wheels have fallen off somewhat since then and as far as I can see the major reason is to do with what's going on between the ears of some of our players. Yes we've been hampered by injuries but who hasn't? At the moment I think we're seriously underachieving. Until a number of things change we'll continue to do so.
Rohan Connolly's article yesterday about our lack of leadership was incorrect on a number of things but the general gist of his argument was spot on. We may have cleaned out the bulk of the fat cats but our leaders are still garbage.
If Campo hadn't been injured he should have been dropped for the worst performance by a leading actress since Gwenyth Paltrow's acceptance speech. Absolutely disgraceful Campo. When you get back to the club I want you to have a walk through the rooms and find yourself a picture of Bruce Doull. Sit down in front of it and ask yourself what he would have thought of that sort of garbage. With the exception of Round 22 2003 I don't think I've ever been more embarrassed to be a Carlton supporter. There was a bloke a metre away waiting to be tackled and our Vice Captain decided to pull the most pathetic dive I reckon I've seen in football 9since his last one anyway).
If this side clicks and sustains the sort of form they've shown they're capable of then they're an outside shot at the top 4 let alone the 8. Laugh all you want. Due to the nature of the way this side was assembled their talent is always overlooked as journos, opposition sides and our own supporters continue to use the "rejects from other clubs" cliches etc.
What's continually overlooked is how many players in this side actually have exceptional natural ability be it Waite, Fevola, Betts, Fisher, Houlihan, Lappin, Walker, Sporn, etc etc etc. I haven't used the obvious talents like Kouta, Whitnall, the downhill skier and co because although they're unfortunately still the face of the club and not one of them has shown any inclination to lead our seriously talented kids to our next premiership. Each of them has shown great natural ability through much of their careers but they're not the future.
BTW, it was mentioned elsewhere that Fev was asked by a journo what Kouta had said to him after his suspension and he replied that he hadn't said anything because he knows you know what you've done is wrong blahdeblahdeblah...
BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rip his @#$%&! heart out Kouta. Why have a captain if he's not going to say anything when a player crosses a line? Absolutely indicative of the club's leadership woes and it has to change.
Other than all that I enjoyed the last quarter immensely and it's great to have expectations again...
