Post subject:  Question regarding membership
Just a question regarding membership. I have been a Carlton gold member for the past 3 years, im just wondering what is the difference between being a carlton member or an Afl member, other than all the money going to the club for carlton membership.
Im just thinking if we make finals next year and the years to come ( we hope ), is it easier to get our hands on finals tickets with an Afl club support membership as opposed to a Carlton club membership?

As a Full AFL Member with a Carlton Club Support package it would certainly be easier accessing Grand Final tickets.

And a commensurate portion of your AFL Membership dollars goes to the Carlton Football Club if you nominate Carlton as your club supported in your AFL Membership.

I have a Full AFL Carlton Club Support membership but i usually get the add-on through the club to a Social Club Member...........so i actually count as 2 x members!

The initial fee is the one that hit's you (i think around $250 from memory) and then it's around $250-$300 for the year.

It's good value (The full AFL membership). It get's you into every AFL game accross the country, including the finals. You then have to purchase a reserved seat for the grand final which is only $20. And it only took me 4 years to earn FULL status.

I'm not sure it gets you a reserved seat, but to be honest, i go to as many Carlton games as i can plus some major blockbusters every now and then and i have never had any problem finding a seat.

The Social Club upgrade i only started buying a few years ago when i hear that the social club was in trouble financially! It was only a $200 add-on or so so i'm more than happy to do that to help the club out.

can an MCC membership count for much instead of an AFL membership regarding finals tickets? because at the moment i hold a club gold concession membership, and a restricted MCC membership, and dad has the Adult equivalent...will these be of better value than AFL or lesser?

Im currently pretty happy with my Carlton membership, gets me reserved seat on Level 2 at the Dome and the G for our home games, top seats with 5 of my mates and just general admission to our away games in Melbourne. Costs me $440 which i think is reasonable considering the seating on level 2 is awesome.
But im just not sure how we would go getting finals tickets ( if we make finals ) with club membership as i heard heaps of supporters call SEN talkback radio and get filthy because they couldnt get their hands on tickets.
Id prefer all the money to go to the Blues because i hate that scumbag Demetriou

in relation to AFL Membership and reserved seats - for those games that you think you should reserve a seat it is about $5 extra for that game - well worth it

Yeah I've wondered about this.

As an interstate member I'm entitled access to 5 (I think) home games per year.

What happens during finals? Is there a bloody mad rush for tickets?

And if we're in a grand final, what are the chances of securing a ticket? I guess I'd be in line with everyone else trying to get a general ticket.

I've thought about getting a more expensive membership but I'm not sure it's worth it as I only come to Melbourne 1 - 2 times per year.

The Prelim tickets were around $20.
My brother owed me some money so that's why i only had to pay $20.

Appologies all.............this was my first ever grand final ticket anyway!

Hollywood, Level 2 is AWSOME at the Dome. Probably the best seating there is.
I'd be happy with that too. The AFL members get Level 3. But to be honest, sometimes i'm happy in the standing section.

The only reason i continue with my AFL membership is beacuse a) my family does too & b) it's gotta be the easiest way to get finals & grand finals tickets. Hell, my mate is an MCC member and he had to line up at 5:00am in the morning to get a grand final seat! WOW! It took us all of 10min to reserve it on-line!

But more money goes back to the club if your a carlton member, hence why i joined the Social Club area too!

Waiting lists are now around 12-13 years. Took me 7 years to get full membership. A couple of mates joined the following year and the AFL membership department told them this year that they wont be getting full member status any earlier than 2009 at this stage. People joining now can expect minimum 12 years.

I joined as an AFL member after the 1999 GF after it was the 3rd grand final I was unable to purchase a GF ticket (93 & 95 also) through my Carlton membership. I had to purchase from ticketing agencies or scalpers. After 99 I'd had enough.

I had other mates who were full AFL members at the time and regardless of the teams involved, they'd been going to every GF, every year and having a great old time! So I though I would join them as an AFL member and now that I am a full member I look forward to not having to flower around to get a ticket when our beloved Blues get back to a GF! 8)

if you pay the extra $5 you get to sit on level 1 OR if it is a really low attending game (not likely) you can go to the ticket booth - show your card and they will give you a seat ticket for free

I'd check that, I think this has dropped considerably.

Has it's advantages but sometimes I feel like I am getting ripped off eg. full member pays more then restricted for supposed more benefits but they are benefits that you still have to pay for eg. GF ticket, Prelim ticket etc.

The main reason I have kept it is that I am guaranteed a seat when Carlton make the GF.

So for example i decide to buy an AFL membership next season, and wanted to go to the grand final... do i get first crack at tickets? Or am i just like every other Joe Blow until i become a full member ?

For AFL members it works like this (and remember the AFL member reserve is quite big at the MCG so there are a good number of seats available)

AFL Full Member (with club support for GF participant) – 1st cab off the rank
AFL Full Member (with no club support for GF participant) – 2nd cab off the rank
AFL Restricted Member (with club support for GF participant) – 3rd cab off the rank
AFL Restricted Member (with no club support for GF participant) – last cab off the rank

If Carlton and filth made the GF you might struggle, but otherwise I’ve known Restricted members with no club support to reach the GF in some years (2004 for example)

Carlton, scum and filth have the most AFL club support nominated members so there is a risk there, but once you’re a full member it is easy

Good thread Hollywood. Thanks for the info everyone. I was actually thinking about the same thing for next year. Just a couple of questions which I would like clarified:

a) If I become an AFL member with club support, I become a restricted member by default until such time as the AFL make me a Full member. Is that correct?

b) AFL members have there own section at the G and the Dome. At the Dome its level 3 (sound like general admission area from what Ryan said) but what level/section is at the G?

c) Can a restricted member with a nominated club (not just a full member) go to any AFL match at any ground throughout Australia?

d) I went to see the Blues play the Roos up at the Gold Coast this year, so I presume you could just use your AFL membership to scan at the gate to get into the game without paying anything (unless you want a reserved seat)?

b) The Dome is level 1. The G is all levels. Although the club support entitles you to a reserved seat as a Carlton Member. For me that is Lvl 3 Dome, Lvl 2A MCG.

c) Regular season....yes

Thanks Mrc C. Sorry just one more question. Do you get to nominate which seat you would like at the G and the Dome with club support? When I was a Carlton Gold member I could say for example that I wanted level 1, seat B22 and that became my seat for the whole season.
