One of my fears with Ratten is that he will swing too far back towards possession football, IMHO we need to find a middle ground. Hopefully that kind of spread of assistants will be a positive influence on Ratten's game plan.

Finally, I would like to at least have a look at getting a recently retired ruckman in as a ruck coach...Luke Darcy springs to mind (although he may go down media street). Sean Rhen also, even though he retired a while ago...he's been an assistant since then, and has a great record. It is vitally important that our young ruck stocks get the BEST possible tuition.

Yes guys but yesterday Kennyhunter posted that Sumich might not be at Carlton next year. Not sure why he said that.

A relative of mine saw Greg Swann at Melb airport in the afternoon and it seems Greg was boarding a flight to Perth... :wink:

Could mean one of two things or both - either sealing the deal with Sumich or negotiating with WC on the Judd deal or both!!!

Sumich was approached by the Blues before about a role and had an initial discussion with Ratten and Blues general manager of football operations, Steven Icke.

"I get on very well with Chris, I've been dealing with him for five years," Sumich said. "Rob Wiley was his midfield coach in his first year in Perth and I've been looking after that area since."

Sumich said Carlton appealed to him. "It would be a new start, it's a great club, great people," he said. "They've got a fresh coach with fresh ideas.

"And the people running the club are very capable."

A while back some people on here mentioned that Carlton were after Sumich as an assistant... this morning they said Sumich was out of the running for the coaching job at Essendon*... Any more news??????? I hear from a mate who works in the media (now in Melb, but was in Perth and an eagles fan) that Sumich is great tactically and a huge reason for the midfield performance of the eagles... Could the blues have said to Juddy, "if sumich doesn't go to the bombers you will be keeping your old coach"????

Nothing new in this article, except that Suma will tell the Eagles' by week's end whether he wants to stay. I'd be rapped to get Sumich, based on his experience (hard to tell about specific skills of these assistants). If we can get a Buckley or a Bond as well, then that gives us a great mix of backgrounds to work with Ratts. Riley - Melbourne / N Daniher - attacking flow of football Sumich - WC / Worsfold / Premiership - attacking footy but knowing how to keep possession, and credited with overseeing the best mid-field in the game Buckley - Coll / Malthouse - attacking style of football, great development of kids Bond - WB (amongt others) / Eade - attacking football (also having learned some of the pitfalls of all out attack), tactical genius in Eade One of my fears with Ratten is that he will swing too far back towards possession football, IMHO we need to find a middle ground. Essendon* are dumb aren't they? They haven't appointed a senior coach and then they try to go about appointing assistants who the new senior coach may or may not like to work with. RABBLE.

I'm totally with you on your fears that Ratten will resort to a keepings-off style, Siegfried. Our drive in recruiting has been towards tall and athletic players. To revert to a style built around seeking out loose players, particularly to the side and behind would not make the best use of our younger players. I want to see JK busting packs inside F50. I want to see Simmo, Murphy and Gibbs take the ball and burst forward in search of Fish, Fev (?), and JK. I want to see Waite and particularly Santy marking and running straight up the corridor a la Scarlett. It seems that there is a trend now towards fast movement of the ball - play on at all costs rather than painstakingly slow progress. It's working for Geelong and Port who both try to own the corridor, with Port using footspeed and Geelong moving the ball fast by foot. And that shift in thinking is likely to be fostered by rule and interpretation changes in the next few years. But although it is a legitimate fear, Ratts is a smart operator, so those fears will likely be unfounded. As you say, though, it can't hurt to bring together assistants who've seen the benefits of aggressive footy. On the Rehn issue, IIRC he has retired from coaching at Brisbane in favour of farming.

It would be in Sumich's interests to work at another AFL club. Presumably, he's worked at a WAFL club before returning to WCE, but he'd still benefit from seeing how another AFL club works. It's worked for Worsfold and Ratts, even if Roos shows it isn't absolutely necessary.

Sumich acquisition would be terrific, if the article isn't rubbish and the quotes used are legitimate than there is a good chance of him being at the blues. It should get all the Pro-Judd people on this site excited. Just quickly, if Sumich is signed does that mean we have all our full-time assistants?? or has the club stated they will be chasing more?? (part-timers not included)

Not too long ago they were claiming that Essendon*, Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn were the four in the running for Judd while on the same day the Age was reporting that Hawthorn was out of the race with quotes from Pelchin, their chief recruiting officer, saying that Judd has refused to meet with them.

Perhaps Sumich is trying to bolster his value to WCE for a new contract by saying that we have offered a generous package to him.
