I know there are many threads with this as a recurring theme, but hearing Gavin Wanganeen speak about Port Adelaide's approach to player development last night further reinforced just how critical this aspect of football has now become.

He said that the Power have been aware of the importance of investing heavily in developing their young players for years now - and that Chocko was a zealot in ensuring the kids get huge amounts of attention.

They travelled to Man U last year to learn more about their development programs, and according to Wanganeen, their young guys have all benefitted greatly from tailored skills sessions (and plenty of them).

Port Adelaide also adopt an 'academy' style education program, teaching the kids the theory of the game at the highest level.

I'm sure Pratt, Swann and Icke are across this - but I'd really like to think we're on the road to AFL best practice in player development.

Anyone know what's on the agenda for 2008?

As we all know - absolutely no point in having top draft picks if you don't have a system to develop them properly.

Last night Ratten mentioned that there would be two development coaches at the club next year.

Is'nt it now so obvious that Pagan & Sticks have had their heads in the sand the last 5 years. They have cost us big time.

At least now Pagan has gone :-D :-D

In he big scheme of things AFL is really at the bottom end of professional sports.
With a pool of about ten million following it... its way behind other sports.
Its a sporting backwater that is slowly coming to a more professional approach.
Still miles behind.

Still.. they started work on he gym this week....so that is going to help things.

The Academy will be set up and it will make a huge difference to player development.
I also want to see our kids developed as civialians aswell in every facet of personal development a Carlton player needs.

One of the more insightful and intelligent posts this year.
We’re getting there, one would say we need 2 to 3 years before we can truly raise our heads.
Dick Pratt is the catalyst , he is catapulting the Mighty Blues forward and will succeed.
We have done our time, how black it was.
Ciao

It would have been nice to have the money to do this in the last 5 years!

Its great to be able to point the finger but the fact is we had the lowest spending on football department in the league. Not Pagan or Sticks fault.

Great news. I have been asking for this for a longtime. This is as important a position in any club and an area we have been let down badly.

Is he full-time though? I knew he was attached to us, but thought it was only on a part-time basis because of his other commitments?

Also Ratten is about to depart AUS to do a tour of all the major world clubs so he will be out to check out key overseas clubs which is probably a good thing for his own presonal improvement

It's good to see that we are finally getting serious re development and facilities in order to keep up with the modern professionalism of the game.

Swann, and to a lesser extent, Pratt are just as important as any player that we will pick up in the next few drafts because they have a refreshing no compromise approach to make everything at CFC the best their is. 8)

Everything is Pagan's fault.

Everything!
