People have been pretty critical of Hughes, and some have been arguing that he should be dismissed. However in relation to pick 17 in the 2006 National Draft, I think he got it spot on. Everyone was bemused when he didn't pick Jetta, but tonight, Hampson showed why he deserved to be taken where we took him. Looked to h ave a great leap, good hands, could palm the ball to advantage, looks like the Kreuzer/Hampson ruck combination will be one of the most feared and talented in the AFL. Considering he has only been playing the game for two years, he is going to be an absolute star in my opinion. Hughesy, you got this one right. Well Done! |

Yeah i agree Hampson looks the goods, particularly as he has only been playing for a few years his potential is huge and who knows how good he might become.. Also like his athleticsm, believe he was impressive in draft sprints etc I think you might have missed what they were critical about. It's probably fair to say Essendon* were never gonna pick hampson with 18 so some feel we should have picked him with 19 and perhaps pick jetta with 17. I, however, am more than happy with the way things worked out as I think grigg will be a much better long term prospect than leroy brown. So.. in the end it wasn't about hampson vs jetta, it was grigg vs jetta.. Well that's what I made of it. |

spot on, jake. grigg has the physical platform to evolve into a great player for our club. even at his age his physique and all round size is very encouraging. its exciting to imagine what he'll be like with a couple of pre seasons under his belt. he will be far more versatile than jetta, and that is based purely on size, strength, agilty...perhaps even skill. and hes certainly not slow. hampson showed some good signs tonight. im pleased that he was given a go over the last fortnight, given a taste of the action so he'll have a good idea what his deficencies are heading into next season. his athleticism cannot be faulted. his leap and running abilty is fantastic. a project player he may be, but one with undoubted potential as im sure we can all appreciate. |

Today convinced me that Hampson will make it! Kennedy looked great. Bower looked the goods. Jamieson is a disciplined defenderand in my opinion will be a 200 game footballer. They all looked good... just need to keep developing them and get games into them. |

I only saw the 2nd half today but I couldn't help but think," Why the flower weren't these young guys playing earlier in the year?" I know some had injuries, but surely some of them could have pinched some games off Saddo and the like? Aggh, what the hell would I know - hey Denis?????

FWIW the Essendon* rumour mill has been rife with stories of Jetta being a party boy who lacks discipline and application. Apparently loves a good time a lot more than a good training session and his attitude has been said to be appalling. Grigg was rumoured to be Adelaide's first choice as they thought Sellar wouldn't survive until pick 14. This is the reason they overlooked Grigg. Sellar is another dogged by suggestions of lazy work ethic etc. At the end of the day, Hampson looks an excellent prospect (raw as he is) and uses both hands in palming the ball as Hughes promised. This gives him great flexibility as a ruckman. Grigg has plenty to work on, but certainly has the raw tools to be a super player - Work rate, application and player development is essentially (duh) to seeing these guys take the next step. |

I was quite impressed with some of his palm work yesterday as we haven't had a good ruckman in I cannot remember how long. Some of his marks were also impressive. The fact that Hampson is cute as well will make him a hearthrob for the CFC. |

I find it amusing that everyone is quick to praise some of these players based on a nothing game - surely you can't think Bower has turned a corner - heaps of very average games and one good game?? |

At this early stage showing signs is all you should ask for. You might talk about certain players that jump straight from the U18 and dominate but how many of them actually become anything better than contributors? For every Chris Judd, you have four or so Haselbys or Daveys or, dare I say it, Whitnalls. |

Paul Bower has played 12 games of senior football. That's not heaps, be they good, average or pitiful. The best sign from him yesterday was his courage backing back for that mark. Courageous defenders should be a mandatory if a team is ever going to achieve real success. If nothing else Paul Bower has ticked that box more than adequately for all the AFL world to see. Give him "heaps" of games and his development will no doubt follow. Yes, too early to tell if he'll be as valuable to our club as a Michael Sexton or Peter Dean, but he deserves praise and encouragement for his game yesterday. |

If I recall he copped the same cheap shot in nearly the exact same position in his very first game against "The Filth" at the MCG. |
