In today's age in an article on the Saints, Parkin stated the following:
Quote:
Parkin uses Sydney's playing list over the same three years and Brisbane Lions' depth of talent during the premiership years of 2001, '02 and '03 to illustrate his point about list management.

"You need two decent ruckman, two decent insiders, two decent carriers and two players who can close down," he said.

"And if you're really well developed, you have one to replace (in each area) if they're not up and going. If you don't have depth, you don't win premierships."

How many of these "decent" players do we have going forward?

IMHO this question goes to the heart of our list management and what we should be thinking of come draft time.

I'd say all of those guys except for Murph. He will be a great player but he hasn't been so great this year compared to the others (except for Stevo).

Hopefully in two years

two decent ruckman...Kreuzer, Aisake, Hampson

two decent insiders...Murphy & Gibbs

two decent carriers... Scotland, Stevens, Simpson & Shaun Burgoyne [assuming we trade pick 3 to Port so they can get Ebert]

and two players who can close down...Walker & Wiggins

Ruckmen: Aisake, Hampson, Jacobs.

Insiders: Gibbs.

Carriers: Simpson, Houlihan, Scotland.

Either: Murphy, Walker, Stevens, Carrazzo, Jackson.

Taggers: Bannister, Anderson, Walker.

+ possibly Kreuzer + Masten/Cotchin/Ebert/Palmer/Morton.

I'd say we WILL fit his recipe, but currently we are relying too much on Murphy, Walker and Gibbs.

Stoppers: We really don't have any. Anderson may get that role, but we need some more development in this area. Bannister is pretty good at this role but only on certain match ups. And he is no certainty to be retained on the list. Wiggins isn't a tagger. Russell showed glimpses but I highly doubt it fits his style of play. Bentick is too slow.

Although I think Parko left out an important category...

Goal kickers: Fev, Waite, Fisher

Exactly. The midfield will look after itself (especially now that it looks like Kreuzer is on his way to PP), and our forwards have been our most impressive feature this year. To be competitive, we need to stop giving up 20+ goals a game. Do this, and that's a good portion of the battle won.

Why do we want Ebert? 190-some games behind him .. not that many in front of him .. would the same impetus behind recruiting Mick Martin be behind recruiting Ebert? Or would this be on the basis of axeing Ackland and getting a real ruckman to teach the likes of Landcruiser, Zacky, and Hammer?
