My first Grand Final - and probably the best I have ever been to.

I was only 10 years old.

I went with a feeling of trepidation because in those days Richmond seemed to have the "wood" over us.

And as we walked to the ground all I can remember was my dad saying "that bloody Sheedy" and other stuff along the lines of "we have to fix the bastards up" etc, which is pretty weird because my dad was a pretty level headed sort of guy (unlike me  ). But there was something about Richmond and Kevin Sheedy which didn't sit right with him (and as a result it certainly doesnt sit right we me  ).

We were certs to lose this game - but we smashed Richmond and I recall the schoolyard was a pretty good place to be in the week after that game - especially with my Navy Blue Jumper with the big number "2" on the back.

It was my first Grand Final as an 18 year old and we came over from Tassie with our High School footy team. Stayed in St Kilda - the Car-O-Tel and had our eyes well and truely opened with the "night life"! We were in the outer of the "G" and a fantastic day to see all the heroes playing - Nicholls, Jezza, Walls, McKay - brilliant. Not to mention all the crowd entertainment as well.

This might sound weird but even though I went to the game and I have vivid recollections of it - I can only remember this game in black and white and not colour.

:? :? :? :? :?

I can't remember what I was doing on the actual day. Probably shitting my pants. I must have been nervous I guess, like AGRO was.

Born in 1982 - not a bad year either.

We sat with my Dad and Des Tuddenham and his family behind the goals in the Southern Stand.

Des agreed with us that it was the best game he had ever seen.

Carlton: 28-9 to Richmond 22-18......a Grand Final Record.

This is ABC's call of the game with what sounds like Tony Charlton and Doug Heywood.

Result still the same. 8)

Might try and find an few Irish Tiger supporters for a few wagers.

Come to think of it they probably wouldn't need to be Irish.

...and what about the colossus? I reckon it was the best game he ever played for us.
...and Wallsy?
Aah those halcyon days of yore!

Had the "wood" over us? That's an understatment. We'd hadn't beaten those pricks in a final since 1920 ??!!???!?! That was the hoodoo that they were referring to in the call.

That's also why Richmond was the first team I ever hated.

Yep ! another one i was at.Similar to '87 in that it was bloody hot.
Didnt think we had a chance actually. They pummelled us in the second semi.Never forget Neil Balme and Ricky McClean being interviewed on WOS by the late Jack Dyer on the following Sunday morning. They had bashed us senseless and the three Tigers were gloating like the GF was a foregone conclusion...........now i dont hold a grudge BUT i do have a good memory.Ah ! revenge is sweet.

Jumped the fence at the end of the game and did the lap of honour with the boys- being eleven I got under the cops' guard. Was a good time in my life cos either the next week or week before ( can't remember now) I was the winner of the 'pick the points' comp for the VFA Dandy v Oakleigh grand final shown on channel 0 (Now 10). I won a brand new Monaro valued at all of $3300!
