I received a SMS today from my brother and it said the following: 'Interesting fact Carlton has won 25 games in 5 years. Fitzroy in their last 5 years won 27, how shit are we!' It took me by surprise but I jumped online when I got home and sure enough he was right. The links are here - Carlton and Fitzroy. I know this does not translate into the fact that we are going to fold or 'merge' with another club - but it just astounds me that over the last five years we have been worse than Fitzroy in their final years. Blue skies ahead though if you ask me with a new coach being appointed soon and things starting to look up off-field as well as on-field. GO BLUES! Sticks1977 ![]() |

Fitroy didn't endure salary cap cheating penalties and rule changes which destroyed their club. |

![]() Why stop there? Carlton 1897-1903 = Carlton 2002-2008 then Carlton 1968-1995 = Carlton 2009-2023 ... is that too much to ask? |

What we went through pales into insignificance in comparison to what the Fitzroy Football Club and it's supporters went through...shafted by their fellow Melbourne clubs (particularly Collingwood and Richmond and to a lesser extent us) and the AFL. In today's world with TPP, draft concessions and the assistance fund, the Fitzroy Football Club would be fine...after all - Melbourne and the Kangaroos hardly get any people to their games in 2007. I am coming at this with a little bias. 3 mates of mine were recruited to Fitzroy and I saw first hand how club instability can affect the playing group. Had they been able to afford to keep Roos, Lynch, Broderick, Armstrong, Gale, Dundas, Elliot and others - combined with the youth coming through from the mid 90's in Molloy, Johnson, Primus, Hawking etc and you have what could have been a very good side that just may have done something ... ...I'm not too surprised by those figures though...Fitzroy were well and truly raped and pillaged completely by the time 1996 had come along. If only the Lions had a Dick Pratt! The Fitzroy sides of '92 and '93 would have beaten the 2005-07 Carlton model comfortably. |

Why don't you tell us what you really think, doc? To be honest, I never have been a fan of the merger or relocation ... if a club can't survive where they have been for so long they should be aided by a slush fund provided by all clubs through the AFL. Or do what Uni did way back when and simply withdraw gracefully. But if everyone who was crap for four or five years withdrew, we'd have no one left .. our glory didn't start until 1903 and that was after six years .. the Aints had to wait longer than that (and cope through how many wooden spoons?). Good things come to those who wait and who want to develop their list .. that's my hope, anyway! And if a market doesn't have sufficient talent to provide its own stars, or enough interest to support a local franchise, why force one onto it?! |
