If we lose every game for the remainder of the year and Ratten gets the coachs gig for 2008, that means we tanked. Mark these words.

I have enjoyed watching Carlton the last 2 weeks , I can live with 4 more like it, then bury a flower army tank in the fwd pocket at Princes Park.

It's ovvvvveeerrrr!

Can we never have talk of tanking again on TC?

Please???

Sadly the talk of tanking will be with us until the AFL change the rules and we get better as a club so we're not in this position again. Realistically it could be cloudy around these parts for a few years to come. Passions will always fuel either side of the argument, sadly you might have to grin and bear it.

Doesn't matter either way.
We do, we don't. We still get the chance to get a top mid if we win. That we are certain of as the pool is big enough to guarantee that.
If we lose we get the chance to get two top players. We still get the mid at #3 but we get the chance to pick up Kreuzer at #1 if that's what the MC wants. Kreuzer is a gun by all accounts but he isn't the ONLY good prospect ruck in the draft and we all know rucks aren't a guarantee early. Being the best ruckman at 17 doesn't automatically extrapolate to the best at 24. The comp is littered with examples of good rucks who were later picks. The odds are much better with midfielders.
It's a lottery.

The truth is:

While the priority pick exists there will always be speculation.

Remove it from next year on and let us enjoy going to games again.

IE.

What happens if we have lined up a high profile player such as Judd or Pavlich (example only). They agree to be traded to us next year but insist on compensation to their club that is adequate.

If we have Pick 1 and say 4 we can still trade pick 4 away for them whilst still having a first round pick.

IE.

What happens if your club was screwed by the AFL over penalties in relation to salary cap breaches, and by losing four more games you could get one pick back and not get the wooden spoon and stick it up them.

Remove it from 2008, I hate having mixed feelings about games.

No tanking talk will still be around even without the priority pick. If you know you haven't made the finals, then the only other "victory" is the best possible pick... so clubs will still tank to improve from say pick 3 to pick 1 if there is an outstanding/exceptional talent.

Does a priority pick count only in the draft proper or does it count in the preseason too?

Tanking talk will ALWAYS exist.

If there is no priority pick, teams will tank to get the highest pick possible, ie why settle for pick 4 when you can lose your last 3 games and grab pick 2.

If there is lottery system for pick 1, then why settle for 1 ball in the lottery barrell when you can have 4 if you lose your last 3.

There is no cure for tanking. As long as the draft exists there will be incentives for sides whose seasons are shot to 'rest' players, 'blood' youngsters and 'operate' on injured stars.

Only relegation can fix this. I know the gulf is too big and it's not practical but the fact is you need something to PLAY for to encourage victories late in the season. Even then though, if one side (ie Richmond) is so far behind the pack that they have the 'relegation' position sewn up, what's to stop a Melbourne & Carlton tank-a-thon for the earlier picks?

The competition is so compromised that the allegations of us tanking on the weekend are so ridiculously minor I don't know what air time is being given to them. Has anyone not seen us for the last 4 years? Tanking? If that's russian for SHIT then fair enough, but where was the outcry when Melbourne, Collingwood and Essendon* rorted the system so spectacularly over the past 3 years...

IF we had beaten Collingwood on Saturday and IF this week was the last round of the season Carlton would have Pick 3 in the national draft and Fremantle would have pick 4

Who is tanking?

Tanking will always be around until they bring in a lottery system..

The lottery could be split into two groups, the top eight and the bottom eight.

This way teams will strive to make the finals or at least finish as high as they possibly can.

You wouldn't tank to miss the finals would you??

We may as well win every game we play from now, because there is no hope in hell that the Dees can beat us in Rd 22

it should go pick 1 - 9th
pick 2 - 10th etc
and so on
the team who wins the wooden spoon gets jack shit. And bring it in just as st Kilda topples again

ahhhhh the good old days.....

Posted this in another thread -IT will fix it

Select the draft order after round 15 - everyone would have played each other once and it would take away this fascination about finishing last.

Teams would be less liking to do an early season tank.

PP awarded if you have 2 wins or less after round 15 much the same as they are now and two years you get PP before the 1st round if you only have 2 wins.

IT would provide and incentive for teams not to win the wodden spoon and also allow teams to better assess their lists as they would be less inclined to rest stars

Likely to end up on 5-6 wins and I'm happy with pick 3. Pick 1 a welcome BONUS, but I'm resigned to the Kruzman being a Tige (at least for the first 2 yrs of his career).

Unless you think like this, you will be heading for the sanitarium for the next few weeks and suffer from severe sleep deprivation.

Having Aisake on our list to compete against any ruck in the comp keeps me sane. Let's just be grateful for that.

At least I know the name of that Bob Fraser guy who the Pies took at Pick 1, you know that "saviour" ruckman guy, a game breaking colossus that would take the Pies to footballing immortality. Oh sorry, Josh.....
