My young niece's father is a Collingwood supporter but I've been trying to convert her discreetly. My 3yo knows the Carlton theme song and sings it loud whenever he can. My 2yo niece has now started copying her cousin who she adores and is now singing the song as well with a few adjustments... "da, da da, da da... We are the mulberry bush!!" yes thats right "the Mulberry bush"... but then again she also calls me donuts... (even though my name is Conrad)... but I figure thats more due to the way I look.. ![]() ![]() Anyway thanks to my son thats one more Carlton supporter and one less Collingwood supporter!!!! |

How many of you guys have actually discussed with your partners what team any future kids would support? I recently got engaged, and early on int he piece I advised her that the kids would be Carlton (she is Essendon*, she's grown up in Essendon* her whole life). She thought I was joking initially, but when I said to her she could pick everything else; schools, clothes, friends, haircuts - everything except the footy team, she realised I was serious. Predictably, she trotted out the 'you can't force them to like Carlton' line, I then reminded her that football isn't a democaracy and it was my way or the highway for the kids (of course, I'm hoping by the time they are able to think for themselves they'll be so brainwashed they won't know any different anyway). I couldn't imagine my kids not supporting Carlton. |

Ok here it is, give the kids a deep seated hatred of the animal first, tell them that Magpies peck Puppy Dogs eyes out poo on their toys. Then refer to each team by their mascot and show disgust at Magpies, the child will join in quickly enough. Now to get him to get over the Tigers, everything about Tigers is cool. Conversely every thing about Richmond is crap.. |

My grandparents both supported Carlton, but my dad went for the Pies. There's hope for all of you yet! ![]() When my daughter was younger she asked me why we didn't barrack for Hawthorn if we lived in Hawthorn. I assured her that it was completely up to her to barrack for whoever she liked. But..... she knows what would happen. SHe looked at me knowingly and said "I know that's not true, mummy." I replied: Yes, it is true. I couldn;t love a child who didn't barrack for Collingwood. Like punter22, I too had an agreement with Shelby's dad. He could choose her name, her religion and anything else apart from the football team. That one was all mine. In fairness to me, he barracks for Geelong. ![]() |

My young son was told a couple of years ago - (when he raised questions about supporting the Blues because he got teased at school due to our poor results) - that he would be living in our garage if he ever contemplated following a different team. Did the trick..... |

I've told my 3 year old daughter that Mapgies are evil birds and should be always shoo'd away. Whenever a magpie flies into our backyard now she starts up with 'Go away Magpie!'. ![]() Most wonderful thing in the world is when she just randomnly starts singing the Carlton song around the house. |

Coming from a science background, I think we should all reflect on the writings of Charles Darwin. Natural selection is a slow, gradual process that can happen without us even realising. However, what we should all gather from this is that in due course, Collingwood supporters will become extinct. |

One of the ideas that has been floated around for the Blueseum is to include a section called something like the 'Parents Handbook' which would give tips and tricks about how to have your kids (and others) grow up barracking for Carlton. |

A question for ttd04: And when will that be? Still many more of us than there are of you. And another factor relating to the Collingwood supporter that is undeniable is that we breed like rabbits. Regardless of how many men than may take. ![]() |

![]() My family is the complete opposite to that. My grandparents were Collingwood supporters, but my mum and my uncle decided to barrack for Carlton. |

My kids don't have a choice. To be honest though, it took about 1-2 weeks of brainwashing 2 years ago and since then no matter who tries to convert them and what they offer, they stand firm. A guy i had dinner with Sat night is a Tigers fan but he was saying he couldnt get his daughter to join him. She loves the colour blue and dogs so she switches between carlton and the Bulldogs. He told her that of the 2, he'd prefer her to stick with carlton. I didn't want to give him too much advice. |
