CARLTON champion Anthony Koutoufides has played his last game. He will announce his retirement today, effective immediately.
Koutoufides, a veteran of 278 games since his 1992 debut, desperately wanted to play out the season and finish his career in Round 22 against Melbourne at the MCG.

But scans last night of a hip injury were worse than first thought, forcing the dual Carlton best-and-fairest winner to retire immediately.

Personally i would like to thank the great man for the service he has provided the club for over 15 years.
Our only remaining premiership player, best & fairest, all Australian, MVP award winner who through the late part of last century and early this century showed his potential as one of the true superstars of the game.

In recent times injuries have slowed him up in a major way and he has been a shadow of what we remember him through that period.

Also as a Greek-Australian i would like to thank him for being such a role model for the rest of us of a similar background growing up and also in latter years through work with various charities.
He has given many kids who come from a migrant background a true belief that we can succeed in this game if we are good enough.

Thanks Kouta many of us will miss the famous 43 running around in the mighty navy blue and white.

Thanks Anthony! A true Carlton legend! Watching you destroy the Eagles at Princes Park in 95 and then finishing off the Bears at the G the same year will be special memories for me.

What other special "Kouta Moments? do we have?

Thanks Kouta - you are another one in the long line of Carlton Champions we are unable to say goodbye to with a farewell game.

Memories of your performances still make my hair stand up on end - the 1999 Preliminary Final performance will stand in the pantheon of match winning games.

Sensational and the prototype of the modern footballer.

How Woewodin wears a Brownlow Medal and you dont will remain one of lifes great mysteries.

Thanks for the memories - Na isse kala.

Always had time for the fans, always put a good image forward of the Club, and one of my favourite players for the last 10 years. Unstoppable in his prime, and had a rare ability to reinvent himself as a player.

It will be sad to see the gun retire, but all good things must come to an end.

I refer you to my signature...what a champion player you are Kouta....thanks for some unbelievable memories especially in the big games. Your performances in the '95 final series and Grand final and of course the '99 Prelim was pure magic..and not forgetting your run of BOG's in 2000 where you absolutely dominated the competition.

Thanks Champ. Gonna miss ya.

All good things must come to an end. It's been fantastic to witness his entire career from beginning to end.

I'll never forget his first goal in footy with only his second kick.

At the Gabba a couple of weekends back the "Browny" chant was in full voice, but it was nothing compared to the Kouta chant of 1996 in that game against West Coast where we won by 1 point.

It's certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Kouta, the highs of 95, the lows of injury, and with the days and nights spent with his dying father football must've seemed like a distant priority for the young man at that time.

Never been in any off-field trouble. No doubt is a top bloke and a great family man. And he won Dancing with the Stars. :-D

WOW!

I remember Koutas first game like it was yesterday, The piece of flake!

He went on to become one of our favourite Sons ever.

We be missed, the last member of our 1995 flag to play.

No premeirship players in our lineup for the first time in a hell of a long time.

Enjoy retirement Kouta , you have served the club well.

Now, whwen is Jamie ready????? :-D

Absolute legend of the game...1999/2000 seasons were a pleasure to watch because of Kouta...

Also one of the most humble champions you could ever meet.

Farewell Kouta

You were a true blue champ. The game against the West Coast Eagles in Rd 5 1996 when you took 18 marks and saved the game for us will live on in my memory as the best game i ever saw a blue boy play. You were stiff not to get the Norm Smith in 1995 and even stiffer not to get Charlie in 2000. Still you will always be a Premiership Player at the Mighty Carlton Football Club - something that the Gibbs's, Murphy's, Waite's and Simmo's should also aspire to.

Enjoy retirement - you have earned it!

A loyal Carlton man through and through, and always a true gentleman. A bloody great footballer, too, and a terrific ambassador for our club and the game in general. Few will have left behind a highlights reel so spectacular.

Thanks for your efforts, Kouta; you'll be remembered fondly, and never forgotten.

They should have a big send-off for Kouta in the Essendon* game. Perhaps they could get Sheeds and Kouta to do the coin toss.

Absolute pleasure to watch Kouta strut his stuff for the last 12 years. A true Carlton champion, who represented the club off the field as good as anyone.
The recent Setanta o'hAilpin article goes to show how highly regarded and respected he is by the playing group. The last surviving member of the 1995 team that ignited my passion for this great club.

Look forward to sending him off appropriately in the coming weeks.
