Frankie, they have lost it. Don't know why or how but our experienced players have lost it.

PS. Stevens also contributed a silly act on the weekend.

Agree there - and supporters can rightfully ask - WHERE'S THE LEADERSHIP?

And it's not like they were flying the flag - and in any case, that's not true flying of the flag, that's just cheap.

Fev could partially be forgiven but if he was smart he would have tried to draw the free kick and provoke Grover to do something stupid.

I have not seen the game as yet, so can't comment directly on any issues from this week, but I have also been concerned about the apparent lack of leadership lately. I certainly hope that pagan is addressing this problem, and if need be perhaps Sticks should be mentoring the leadership group in what is really required.

yes he did but at least he is playing next week.
We play on the weekend against the side most are predicting to be bottom without our leading goalkicker (who starred last year against them when we just got over the line)after a 6 day break after 2 road trips
If ever we need a big performance from fev it was next friday night.
From my understanding of new tribunal system it looks like fev is going to be missing for 3 weeks - unforgiveable given we play richmond and geelong in 2 weeks after the hawthorn game
As everyone knows these games are absolutely critical to our chances in respect of season 2005.

No leadership at all IMO.....some dumb incidents from senior players in recent games which have showed no discipline. Kouta is a nice bloke but we need someone with more mongrel to lead the troops into battle and knock a few of our own players back into line and set the example for our younger players....if only Aaron Hamill wasnt so greedy... :(

Caz, it was the usual suspects who refused to man up when going the other way, who showed petulance and apathy.

From the body language on the video, I'm talking Camporeale trying to get cheap kicks, Whitnall leading wide, playing for free kicks etc.

Poor.

OK people what should they do then?

Tell me how they should lead?

Well they could start by

A: Not being undisciplined
B: Not copping suspensions that hurt the club and playing group as a whole.
C: Contribute more at training - as I have heard some of the leadership group is slacking off.
D: Acting as role models and not IDIOTS!!

..............

Mark. leaders encourage, talk, teach and physically get involved in the game when needed to inspire their teammates. During a game on the ground our boys don't do this. I don't know if they do during training or in the rooms but on the ground this is not evident.

line them up and shoot them! - dont think it matters really. Some players get cricised whereas others appear exempt. Leadership is not dictated by age, experience or stature. You dont have to be part of any leadership group to lead.

Kouta is our leader. I love the leader. the leader is good, the leader is great, we surrender our will, as of this date.

So what I am reading is

Lots of group hugs and bottom pats

'Fly the flag' but do not reported doing it? Bit hard to do in todays climate.

Bluemark,

Suggetions:

- After training leaders could be assigned 2 young players and spend half an hour with them working on any thing they need working on.
- Leaders should not get suspended.

- When the game is in the balance like the first five games have been stand up and show the way.

Bad examples of leadership:

Kangas- Campo gave away a stupid free and 50 metre penalty in the first 15 mins of the game. Not sending the right message.

Collingwood- Campo sucked in again by Holland who kicked 3-4 goals. No one stood up late in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Rocca lead the way.

Freemantle- In the second quarter we were crying out for leadership, Fev tried to fly the flag but in the process does something stupid. We should not have to wait for a quarter time or half time break to compose ourselves. Someone on the ground needs to do it.

This is a fascinating topic and is open to all types of interpretations of the definition of leadership.

Sticks is my all time favourite and I loved the guy as a player and an on field leader.

Can anyone remember how many times Sticks got reported?

What was Sticks like on the training track when he played? Did he stay behind and help out the kids or do extra sessions?

Also, while the incident this week obviously did not show 'on-field' leadership, Fevola is technically not in the 'official' leadership group this year.

"The appointment of Camporeale finalises the Carlton leadership team for 2005, Camporeale will assist Anthony Koutoufides as Captain, the pair are joined by Barnaby French, Matthew Lappin, Ian Prendergast, Nick Stevens, David Teague and Lance Whitnall in the 2005 Leadership group."

I think that is the major problem with this issue - everyone is looking for 'leaders'. Leaders dont have to be part of any leadership group and if your outside of that group, it doesnt mean you cant be a leader and have to be a follower. Leadership can be shown by each and every player on field regardless of age, experience and stature. So rather than trying to find that great leader, how about more effort in teaching every player what leadership means?

I'd rather have a playing list full of good/average players who know what it means to be a leader (and try to live up to it) than a good playing list of sheep who rely on 1-2 great leaders.

Forget flying the flag leave that to people like brereton - play tough uncompromising footy for your team -leadersspeak louder with actions rather than words- think team before yourself - play team before yourself and dont get sucked in by lesser players such as holland welsh grover whose only real achievement is to get better players in
DONT GET REPORTED for stupid frivilous offences which reflect badly on you your team and have a detrimental affect on your team when you are suspended.

They can do worse than look at a 20 year old Luke Balls leadership.
Thats a guy who learnt from Hamill and Harvey and not Whitnall, Kouta, Bradley and Campo.
Just watch Luke Balls leadership since Riewoldt has gone down and youll realise how devoid of leadership we are (have been).
If i could snatch a guy from any team in the league right now it will be Luke Ball. A guy who will not only give you 12 years of fantastic service (Captaining 10 of them) but also run the footy club when hes finished.

Our leaders dont believe they will be around for the next premiership so at the moment all theyre interested in is self preservation.
Draw a line in the sand and start with new leaders.

Theyre teaching our boys that when youve 'made it ' you can knock of training early. ... well they learnt it from Braddles .. the captain who trained on his own till his contract was signed...

People cant see theres a culture problem that needs to be addressed. Its the 'me team'... sooner they piss off the better.
