Carlton needs to do it. To hell with the supposed health risks. Hawthorn did it a few years back and still speak of the benefits. So much so that they are talking of doing it again this year. I watched a doco on it a few weeks back, it's certainly the type of activity that will develop team spirit, bring teammates closer together, maybe instil some confidence and generally bring the Group closer together. Might help to fast track the development of some leaders and unearth some new ones.

If money is no object, this off season is the perfect time.

becuase it becomes a contrived action, if we simply do something becuase it was successful for Hawthorn.

It was a success for Hawthorn, becuase they did it, and becuase no-one else had done it.

get them doing the SAS training in the UK or something, something where you have to go beyond physical strength and endurance, but can also be very very rewarding if you complete it.

the reason for the UK over the Australia one is the weather.

SAS training here is done in Perth, in what can be extreme heat.

UK its done in the Mountains and not as hot, but still physically demanding.

and i dont mean a specific SAS Course (they last up to 6 months depending on what course you are undertaking) but a course created purposefully, to last 2 weeks or so aimed at the players working together, pushing themselves, pushing each other etc.. etc..

SAS is just an idea by the way

There are millions of types of Kokoda style trips to be had. Personally i have suffered through Military basic training not unlike the photos above and have done all manner of leadership training style activities, mountaineering, rafting etc etc and at the end of it what matters is the shared experience.

You need to challenge people both physically and mentally and get them working together. When you are at your lowest ebb and you look around you and see others struggling too you know you cant let the team down. Anybody that does quit isnt worth having. I could type reams on here about plumbing the depth of your soul to realise just how bad you need to go to realise how good you really can be. When you reach that lowest ebb and find out that you are still going you get to realise that you can push yourself further, harder etc. Having other guys there to help out when you know they are also hurting is awesome.

If you have foxtel watch a show tonight called 'Bad Lads Army'. They take juvenile delinquents and put them through 1950's style basic training. A lot of it is sensationalised for TV but see the effect it has on these losers. After 3-4 weeks they are eating raw meat and would die for each other.

I know ex RSMs etc who left the military after 20-30 years to start leadership training companies and run corporate leadership training etc, there would be some of these around. Have one of these mobs put together a moutaineering trip in NZ, a hike through the daintree or the tasmanian wilderness. The location is not important, hell the Army does it at Kapooka, Singleton Puckapunyal etc, what is important is the shared experience and bonding.

I love it from a voyeuristic perspective because, as anybody who has suffered through it will tell you, once you survive and come out the other side, rites of passage style, there is nothing as funny as seing some seriously nasty SNCO absolutely beast some useless squib who deperately needs their head stoved in.
