Taking Mrs 3 out for lunch today. She has managed to find a store with a Carlton jumper in her size in stock. She wanted Fevs number but as his future is up in the air she is going for Setanta's - little Caitlin can have Fev on hers.

We are all going hoping for a win - infact praying for a win given we have to sit with all snobs in the Bradman stand.

WTF is a dime?
I know what a zac is, a trey, even a deener. A Henry. A brick too.
But to my knowledge we don't have dimes in our currency, past or present.
Just another Americanization of the Australian language.
Tell the kids that Australian English doesn't matter. It's all about what they see on Sesame Street. All about the TV. It doesn't matter about our expectations for the future of the Australian language any more than today's win or loss matters in the scheme of the grand Carlton plan.
It doesn't matter that the kids can't spell 'colour' or 'premiership', let alone remember a glorious Blue one.
Pity. It took the gloss off a good read.

"Just another Americanization of the Australian language."

Is that Americanization or Americanisation? :)

you know what a dime is. And it sounded far better than cent (dime has the gangster connotations - a sort of James Cagney bradvado)

as for the rest

Language is changing, will change, must change.

as for the spelling - you mean we should keep the English way rather than the American way - why?

and thanks for the replies people.

Off topic, but what the heck.

Languages have been evolving for millenia, taking words from other languages, dropping words, changing spelling, words changing in meaning.

Why should language suddenly become rigid and exclusionary after being fluid for such a long time.

IMO the more languages flow and meld together the better for society in general.

Why not just drop the crap and admit you can't spell?

Depends which dictionary one uses. The accepted rule is that if both appear, either may be used. In some formal contexts, if both appear, the 's' version IS to be used but I am not sure that rule applies to TC.

I think we should try and hold on to what is ours rather than just become a future America. I am sure it will happen eventually as others have mentioned, through evolution. I just get a bit riled sometimes when aspects of OUR game starts to be referred to in American sports terms.
'Quarterbacking' springs to mind. and I just saw this as a distant cousin of that.
Also I must admit to being an inflexible old bastard who had this stuff put into my brain through the seat of my pants by the Christian Brothers.
Now you know.
By the way, I love the Ghost articles. They remind me of my days at PP with my old dad explaining who was who and why things happened. I wish in some ways I had had the opportunity to pass the spirit onto my kids the same way but I didn't get the chance. I think there is a bit of the Ghost in all of us.
Maybe with my new daughter somewhere down the track.

porridge, tea and read the articles to/with her. 8)

the same oh so Christian whacks are why I couldn't give a toss - funny how the same thing can affect us differently.
