Post subject:  Are we truly THE 'wog club' ?

On many ocassions, I've heard opposition supporters refer to Carlton as the 'wog' club of the AFL. I then wondered why we'd be seen this way by others and I came up with 3 points that give our great club this reputation:
1- I think we've got the biggest multiculutral fan base is the AFL
2 - We've had many many significent players from ethnic backgrounds (Silvagni x2, Marcou, Cattogio, Kouta, Ang, Hanna, Campo, Jezza etc etc)
3 - The link between Carlton FC and Lygon St

Being Greek myself, I'm proud we're seen this way by opposition fans. I remember we used to call the standing room behind the goals at Princes Park 'the Multiculutural section' as you'd look around and see a Greek fruiterer talking with an Italian labourer who'd be standing next to an Asian student etc.

Just want to get a general consensus of people on here to see just how multicultural our fan base really is.
There fore, 2 questions for you guys:
1 - What is your Ethnic background ?
2 - Why did you choose to support the Mighty Blues ?

i was born in australia, melbourne. But my parents are from egypt, so i have an egyptian background. And when i was bout 3, my dad went for da blues and he loved Jezza, so he told me to go for the blues, and its been the best decision his made for me.

Carlton is an Italian Club and i think that is awesome.

Go blues, go Feva

Half wog...

No choice, born a blue boy. Born in Carlton and wrapped in a blues scarf in my first few days.

1) I'm as Anglo as they come. Part-Scottish, Part-Irish/English. Blond hair, blue eyes, freckles.
2) To be truthful I can't remember my exact reason for going for the Blues, I was so young. My dad is a Collingwood man and my brother is Richmond. Obviously Carlton were one of the powerhouses at the time, and perhaps because I hated my older brother (like we all do at some point) perhaps I chose Carlton just to spite him. My mum reckons I just liked the name "The Blues". I don't know for sure.

I don't know about Carlton as the "wog club" anymore, as most Italians and Greeks I talk to nowadays seem to be filth supporters.

2. Got no idea how I ended up barracking for Carlton. I lived in Brunswick as a 6 year old and my two older cousins lived next door. Funnily enough, they barracked for Collingwood. My earliest memory was of my Uncle coming to visit us from Murrumbeena on GrandFinal day 1969. He made mention of the traffic on Punt Rd and had a go at me for the Blues losing the flag.
3. I can't wait for 7.30pm until dawn on the last Saturday/Sunday in September in the year that we win flag 17. LYGON STREET WILL BE ROCKIN!!!!!!! for all to see. I'll see you at Papa Ginos........

Course we're still the 'wog club'. You may not think so, but having big Carlton flags hanging up and down Lygon Street says it all :-D

1. South African born

2. Went to my first game of footy in 1984 (Carlton-Fitzroy) but don't remember it. In 1986 I went with a school friend to Carlton vs Nth Melbourne and I said I would barrack for the winner. The Blues won by 16 points and I have been a rabid supporter ever since. When I was at uni I had a mad Carlton supporter firend who taught me all the things I needed to know about the History, the rivalry etc

Carlton was always the "workingman's" club in the pre VFL days when Melbourne and South Yarra clubs in the early days were "the establishment".
And unlike some other clubs was not so much a Catholic or a Protestant club, so all religions mixed.

So Carlton would have gathered support of working class people from all backgrounds.

Carlton the suburb and surrounds were the inner city areas where migrants first settled.
Pre war Carlton had a large Jewish population.
Greeks, Maltese, Italians etc. filled the void when the earlier inhabitants moved out to the newer suburbs.

Certainly the names of Silvagni, Barassi, Benetti, Varlamous, Koutafides, Jesaulenko, Kekovitch, Munari, Pavlou , Zeunart etc, etc, reflect our multicultural society.

As for myself my father was born in Parkville, lived in North Carlton and went to school at Princes Park State. My mother was born in rural Victoria and came to Brunswick as small girl to live when her father died.

Both of course were Carlton supporters as were their parents.

My children had no choice of what team to barrack for.
My brother and his kids the same.

All our cousins from both sides of family are Carlton. Except for two female cousins who for some strange reason follow Essendon*. They now live in Brisbane and London.
The one who lives in London her husband follows Millwall and CARLTON. (and he is a dinky-die Cockney)

One of my nephews was an Essendon* supporter, he says I told him that he would not be allowed into my house if he followed the Bombers.

He now follows the Mighty Blues.
