Post subject:  A Plan B perhaps?
Dear Denis,

Thankyou for allowing our team to play entertaining football. I have enjoyed watching most games and our wins have been spectaclular. However, I feel the next stage of our development should involve trying to stop teams kicking goals. We have clearly shown that we have the capability of kicking many goals but we have no plan B and clearly cannot stop teams kicking multiple goals on us.

You can say that we are young and developing; True, but this has been a problem since you have been at the club. Remember all those recycled players that you brought to the club? even in 2004 when we won 10 games, we consistently lost games by 100 points or more. So this is a consistent aspect of your coaching and you have done little so far to address our defensive liabilities.

Last year we had little plan; this year we have Plan A (all out attack); this last half of the season, we need to be more than single plan team and develop some defensive skills.

No it is not Denis bashing, He has done a good job this year, but now it is time to say 'yes, we can match it one on one and kick goals- but lets use the 2nd half of the season to develop a contingency plan when we are beaten at our own game.

It is the natural progression for this team.

It is called team and player development. Do you really want a team that allows the opposition to score 18-20 goals week in week out. That game plan is fun while it lasts, but it easily picked apart by better lists.

Bentick can play, but he had a shocker tonight and hasn't been at his best for the last two weeks. Saddington too, has been, at least serviceable in recent games, but yes, he did have a shocker tonight.

But, there was plenty of guys to play well below their best tonight. That's not all Denis' fault.

Rubbish...... Of course Denis could of done something. You cannot play the same style of footy against every team. The style needs to be adapted for every game. The boring hawks are predictable the way they play and we should of adjusted to that. Bloody embarassing watching lance and saddington get killed by young unknown players and they way they predictably got the ball out of the centre each and every time.

So we need to be adaptable but the "boring hawks are predictable" and don't?

Nah...................it was a reality check..............and perhaps we needed it.

Denis has never had the ability to change the out-come of the match mid-game. Which is why the bombers win was such a shock.

Denis is far to predictable, and the Hawks had the game in the bag from their 2nd goal.

They stoped our midfield run which forced us into panic situations and what do we do? We go back to the Blues of old with the "hold up play, then Kick long to a contest along the wing & hope for the best"

God it's just so amaturish.

Don't get me wrong i have loved the way we have played these past 5 matches (bar last night) but as much as that entertaining style has been effective, it is not gonna win us games each time.

West coast can do it cause they have Judd & Kerr & Cox etc.

Pagan was stuffed from the get go last night and had no clue how to counter-attack Hawthorn.
The players looked lost, tired, confused, but most of all............were looking for some inspiration, some leadership & some belief.

I look to the Captain & Coach to provide that, and neither did anything.

I'm slowly loosing faith in Lance, who has been one of my favourite players over the years.

But Pagan, whilst he has done some decent stuff this year that deserves to be commended, is clearly just not up to coaching anymore. The sooner we realise this, the better off we are.

It was fitting that in his 100th game as coach, he looses by 100 point, which is probably about the 50th time it has happened to him at Carlton.

People can see this as Pagan bashing if you like, perhas it is a bit, but it was a total reality check last night and perhaps we needed it. All this crap in the papers that 'Oh maybe Pagan is a good coach', 'Maybe he's job is safe'.

Bull!

This is a good list, and a list with alot of players that other teams would KILL to get their hands on.

Waite & Fevola.
Walker, Simpson, Murphy.
Thornton, Whitnall.

That's a spine right there that is worthy of respect. Other coaches under preasure (IE Daniher, Laidley, Wallace, Connolly) would love those players!

And i'm sick of playing the 'Youth' card for an excuse. "oh our players are young, this type of thing will happen".
There was a young kid last night who kicked 5 goals for god sake!

No Plan B is correct.

In the coaches words it is boldly take the game on, move it quickly through the centre corridor and kick it long to the deepest target inside fifty. Lately we have rotated different players to be the deepest target and used fev as a bit of a decoy. This plan has worked and we have scored a large number of goals. Unfortunately boldly taking the game on leaves us open to having easy goals kicked against us.

Hawthorn used a cloud. Loading the centre coridor with players which made it difficult to get the ball in their. Probably the same tactic they used on the cats. Our blokes began second guessing their first instict to go inboard due to the cloud so we began chipping the ball around the boundary. Didnt work. So they got the easy goals and we got nothing.
We wernt winning the ball so we were on the back foot all night.

Pagan could have resorted to putting blokes back behind the ball and slowed up the game and doing this would have seen us lose by eight goals . Probably wouldnt have been good for the players and the style of games he is trying to develope.

A plan that isnt so risky is the go in the long run. Pagan stated that. Said he wouldnt have them playing like that if we were playing for final spot not for development.

I am not defending pagan here. I am happy for someone else to take over. Just hope we dont get a super flooder type coach. A coach that can develpe a plan like geelongs and hawthorns where players push back hard and then explode forward in waves with hard running once the ball is in our hands is what i want. This game plan requires a mature or close to mature team.

I think we can bounce back from this loss but the travel is going to make it hard.
