Post subject:  Freo and home ground immunity

I thought we probably had the majority of the play for 3 quarters, but our 2nd quarter was so bad, and our finishing was so poor, we cost ourselves any chance of sneaking a win.

But having watched Freo closely for the first time in a while, it doesn't surprise me that they struggle on the road. Not only do they play a defensive, indirect style of play. But they have 4 players who push their opponents in the back at every contest they're part of: Medhurst, Farmer, McPharlin and Longmuir.

Certainly not saying they should be free kicked every time, but they should be free kicked a lot more than are. And away from the protective 'cocoon' of their home crowd and the pressure which that places on umpires, I'm not surprised they struggle to be as effective (and to get away with as much). (Particularly given the current 'interpretation' on what's allowable in marking contests.

The irony is that not only do they push whenever behind, but they (particularly Farmer) dive when in front. Umpires didn't get sucked in too often today. But they don't have to, for it to hurt the opposition.

PS I thought we got a good run with the umps in the last quarter. (I don't think this is just 'losers' whinge!)
