If not, what's Matty Allan up to these days?

Isn't Matty GM at the VFL?

Yeh he's the GM at Bendigo Bombers

Pretty sure Matty Allan handed his resignation in a couple of weeks ago & finishes up pretty soon. End of month i think.

Dempsey took training last week Wednesday. Took some of the big guys through their routines.

For those of us cringeing at the idea of John "Sam" Newman having anything to do with the Blues, is the television persona anything like the real person?

He is the reason I will not watch the AFL Footy Show .. that and its time slot here in Sydney .. and, to be honest, being a part-time watcher of the footy means I don't have much to see or do with the coaching staff ...

I think you will find that while Sam is still a clown off The Footy Show, there is a serious side to his ruck coaching.

He'd be great.

I agree. he is a clown for his million dollar contract but he's a very intelligent ruck coach

Losing Gary Dempsey has probably hurt us more than first thought. So should he be replaced and if so with whom? I would be making enquiries about David Cloke's availability at least on a temporary basis. As Cameron is out for the rest of the year there wouldn't be any conflict of interest as his dad or as his boy's manager. He manages the Celtic club in Queen St. 5 minutes from Princes Park and may be available a couple of mornings a week before the Guiness starts flowing. I think his experience, his nous and general ''mongrel attitude'' Would be invaluable to our rucks particularly Carlos, but also to Lance. His controlled aggression and his ability to hold his ground in heavy traffic and not be knocked off the ball made him a bloody formidable customer in his playing days. His body work was first class and I think he could be of enormous benifit to the club at least in the short term if he was available. Just a thought !

For a minute I thought you were suggesting he replace Ackland. And I liked it!

I have no idea what Dempsey is like as a ruck coach, other than to say that our rucks have hardly set the world on fire while he has been there.

One thing I will say though, is that I kind oflike the idea of a ruck coach who actually played when the current ruck rules were in place ie line across the centre circle, and the second circle. Neither Dempsey nor Newman did this.

The second circle is still new, so will be hard to find a retired player that rucked with it and can coach. However, surely we should be looking at a ruck coach who rucked when the line was in place.

Over my poor and dead lifeless body.

David Cloke is a knob.

I would ask Mike Fitzpatrick if he has got some spare time?
Nobody seemed to mind Ron Evans conflict of interest so perhaps the new AFL president should create his own conflict of interest

To answer your first point, he's hardly had any a grade talent to work with.

Your second point is well made though. Would have been nice to have secured Sean Rehn, while he may not have played for a few years he'd have a better grasp on the modern game, you'd reckon, and he's supposedly a good overall coach as well.

Perhaps Libba could help persuade Luke Darcy into retirement. :P

What we shouldn't forget is just how much improvement there is in these boys.

O'hAilpin is further advanced than Stynes was at the same stage of their careers. Jimmy, after a couple of years battling in the under-19s and reserves was sent back to Prahran in the VFA to continue his development. It wasn't until his fourth year here that he played his first game of senior VFL football.

O'hAilpin made his senior debut in just his second year. At 199cm and with a similar work ethic and aerobic capacity as Stynes, he is every chance of becoming an AFL star.

For those who have sniggered at some of the Carlton big man's efforts, remember that Jimmy was every bit as awkward. The difference being Jimmy made his mistakes away from the prying eyes, at Prahran.

All the more reason to make sure we have the best ruck coach we can get. Again, I don't know how good Dempsey is as a coach, but I do know he hasnt played the game in a very long time.

We need to make sure that Setanta gets the best development assistance he can get.

Good news: Was at training today and there he was taking ruck training. Really glad he is back and delighted he has recovered so quickly.

Absolutely, this is good news! Really happy that he's healthy first and foremost, being back at training is a bonus.
