Cheers for that. Fantastic that we managed to get him ahead of Essendon*. Although I have to say I'm fairly surprised that we manage to pick up a player ahead of a fairly financially powerful club like the bombers. I realise we have the potential to be the same as soon as we start winning again but we aren't quite there yet. |

If we want him when he's old enough, we can draft him. I think it's like a rookie elevation - you don't sacrifice a draft pick as you do with the F/S picks. |

No draft pick, only a spot on the list??...that is well worth the gamble. How many NSW kids can you sign up?? |

Don't quote me on that Bill ... I'm sure we have a right to draft them, but I'm not absolutely sure that there's no need to commit a draft pick. There's a limit of 2 sholarship players, but again I don't know whether that is per year or at any time. I suspect the latter. We have 2 at the moment. |

The kid is a gun baseball player and plays good golf. I reckon he will keep his options open as long as possible. There are one or two Oz baseball players on major-leagues team lists in the USA including a kid from Adelade (actually no longer a kid) who was picked up a few years ago on an opening contract of something like $6 million!!! I'm not sure he ever actually started a game but he got paid anyway. THAT'S how you do it! |

Agreed that you wouldn't be able to use it to add him to take you above the maximum number allowed on the list. But there's nothing to stop the AFL providing that you can just add the player to your senior list. After all, rookies can be added to the senior list prior to the National Draft merely by notifying the AFL via the first List Lodgement. That doesn't involve the use of a draft pick, whether at the end of the draft or otherwise. In one sense, even if you just add the name to the senior list, it does mean you have one less draft pick at the end of the draft. But the same thing happens when you re-sign an older player rather than delisting him, or if you elevate a rookie. |

My understanding of it is that the club has first dibs on them but doesn't have to use a draft pick until their last available pick. For example we could have used pick 83 this year had we had one. |

That's possible, BS, but it's hard to find a definitive statement on this aspect. The closest I've come to is the following: Quote: The scholarship program will start in January 2007 and provides an opportunity for those selected to receive additional development support from their respective AFL clubs. In the event that the player's development warrants a spot on the club's rookie or senior list after their 18th year, the club will have the option of including the player on to one of these lists without him having to enter the national draft.

As I indicated above, the effect of placing a sholarship holder onto a list is that you have one less selection in the National Draft than you would have had if you didn't do this. In the example you gave, the consequence of placing one on the list last year would have been that we couldn't use pick 83, if we had it. Otherwise, we'd have had 39 on the primary list and that is just not allowed.
