Let's say for the sake of argument (and VERY wishful thinking) that we have a team capable of winning a premiership within the next 5 years. Who do you think, from our current group, would be a part of that team?

For me, I'd like to see (some gaps to be filled obviously)
B Anderson O'Hailpin ???
HB Scotland Waite Thornton
C Walker Gibbs Simpson
HF Russell Kennedy ??????
F Betts Fevola Fisher
Foll ??????? Murphy Carazzo
Int: Bower Bentick

Any other takers?

i'll have a stab at it:

FB: carrazzo o'hailpin anderson
HB: russell waite thornton
C: simpson walker ??
HF: fisher kennedy ??
FF: betts fevola ??
RR: (kreuzer??) gibbs murphy
INT: blackwell bentick bower ??

you'd probably expect at least 3 or 4 of these guys i've named to not be getting a game/traded/delisted by the time we win our next flag (which i don't think is too far way)

B: Anderson Setanta <interchangable>
HB: Walker Waite T-Bird
C: Gibbs Murphy Simpson
HF: Houlihan <interchangable> Benji
F: Betts Fevola Fisher
R: Aisake Stevens Scotland
Int: Carrazzo Hampson Grigg <interchangable>

I then have another 11 I'd like to see on the list provided they can fit into our structure:

Russell
Kennedy
Bower
Austin
Hartlett
Cloke
Raso
Edwards
Jackson
Jamison
Flint

Looking over that, you can see why we need to target skilful smaller players in the draft or elsewhere (5/30 players <187 cms), and that we have a surplus of player types from which to create bargaining power.

I should note that I do not neccessarily think that all of the remaining 13 should just be discarded as duds. Bentick, Blackwell & Jacobs could still prove to have a lot of worth, but are not particularly exceptional players at this point.

Indeed. They might as well just throw us the cup now and get it over-with.

In all seriousness who do you think would still be around from our current crop and who wouldn't?

Naturally there seems a strong case about Murphy, Walker and Gibbs, but who else would you pin the expectation on?

If we are serious about a premiership in the next 4 years the majority of the team will have to come from our current list (probably 18-20 out of the 22 spots). This is discounting trades or acquiring good mature aged players through the drafts (most likely PSD). It's not until the mid to late 20s that players peak, so most premiership teams have an average age of around 25-26. You would expect 3-4 oldies, a bunch of 23-27 year olds and a couple of youngsters.

So our 2011 premiership team would be

FB Bower (24) S O'hAilpin (29) <Unknown>
HB Grigg (23) Thornton (28 ) Scotland (31)
C Gibbs (23) Simpson (27) Stevens (32)
HF Benjamin (23) Kennedy(24) Edwards(24)
FF Fisher (27) Fevola (31) Betts (25)
R Hampson (24) Walker (25) Murphy (24)
Int Blackwell (25) Russell (25) Waite (29) A O'hAilpin (25)

Emergencies from:
Anderson (23)
Austin (23)
Carrazzo (28 )
Houlihan (30)

Delisted, Traded or Retired
Flint (24)
Raso (24)
Jackson (25)
Hartlett (25)
Bentick (26)
Cloke (27)
Young (28)
Bannister (29)
Wiggins (29)
McLaren (29)
Ackland (30)
Teague (30)
Saddington (32)
Whitnall (32)
Lappin (36)
Koutoufides (39)

Well I've nominated about 2 and a half drafts worth of players I think will get the chop over time.

I suppose on top of that your current candidates would be (either the chop or traded): Russell, Kennedy, Flint, Jamison, Jackson, Hartlett, Bower, Raso

I have a lot of faith in the talent of 3/4 our list. We just lack a large chunk of experience and miles in the legs to go with that.

edwards is a better overall player than fisher... although fisher should get plenty of game time.

no lappin, kouta, whitnall or houlihan...stevens will be on his last legs.

hoping to see hartlett come on bit more to take up the CHB possie and kennedy to take up CHF and we need an a-grade ruck [hampson?] with aisake as back up.

shocking call considering edwards hasnt played a game yet & fisher is tracking @ 40+ goals in a bottom 4 team that is for the most part too dumb to realise we have other forwards apart from fev.

fisher is an aerialist and a nice player but i think its time to start weeding out players with poor disposal on the run. turn overs are killing us and fishers disposal by foot wont improve although his shots on goals surely has.
edwards from what i have seen is a better player overall.

he will play a few games this year, one hopes. i like the way he goes about it... similar to fisher except edwards disposal is superior.
