Report by Greg Baum in the Sunday Age...(I think an unfair bagging BTW)

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/l ... 52803.html

Their opponents were a contrast. Brown was manned by O'hAilpin, who greeted him in the now traditional way, with a bump, a shove and a a mouthful. And the Irish are supposed to be hospitable? Brown laughed, and outmarked O'hAilpin one on one. Then he did it again.

It became a thrashing. At its height, Brown was once seen to lick his fingers as the ball sped towards him, in the manner of Wayne Carey. This was better than Kentucky Fried ever was.

O'hAilpin continued to push, shove and bump, but rarely to make any other impact on Brown. Soon enough, a umpire will penalise him 100 metres ahead of the ball. O'hAilpin continues to prompt cheers from the Carlton faithful whenever he is near the ball, but frankly, his popularity far exceeds his exploits.

Coach Denis Pagan did not relieve him, for he must somehow provide for the future even as he services the present. Hopefully, this was a lesson learned. Last night, it was about the difference between a myth and a legend.

Not much wrong with the article, he said he got thrashed and he did.

He's a kid against a superstar....number one.....and I didn't think it was necessary to be alerting the Umpires of Setanta's style of play.

Brown said he wouldn't want to play on him in 2 years so who cares about what a journo thinks?

I agree completely inappropriate. Definite bias in this article

Baum, like the rest of the non-Carlton football community, will catch on in due time.

If he wants to highlight his complete and utter ignorance in such a public fashion then so be it.

Setanta still had a couple of victories in one-on-one contested ball on Saturday night.

We have 2009's best full back in the league on our hands.

Setanta could do without the push and shove, probably doesn't help his concentration and is a waste of time on Brown. (THo it is so mild one wonders why Baum would even comment on it)

Fact is Carlton played one on one which means the defence has no cover and Brown has miles of room and some silky midfielders up ahead. Brown is a superstar, fanstastic strength and hands and very quick over 5 metres. I don't think anyone could have stopped him on the lead in an open style game like that. He beat Santy for strength several times, but a lesser player would have dropped the marks under the pressure Santy put on. When Santy had a run in he spoiled well. But Brown is a superstar and Santy has played a handful of games and is now on the oppos gun forward every week. Greg Baum might do well to acknowledge that. He sounds like an Essednon supporter to me and while he writes much more fluently than Patrick Smith (who doesn't) he seems to have his self righteous unempathetic mindset.

The article is written by someone who doesn't understand football and doesn't understand Setanta.

"his popularity far exceeds his exploits"

What a cock sucker. Setanta is less than 20 games into his career, and was playing on the best forward in the competition who was getting constant and effective supply from his midfield. Setanta was beaten yes, but he had a good game and did his job. He kept Brown to 3 goals and to several marks out wide where Brown could do little damage. The stats don't tell that story. Setanta also out played Brown on a number of occasions - particularly later in the game.

Yes Setanta was beaten, but let's keep things in perspective here. Any other player would have been beaten by Brown on Saturday night and probably even more comprehensively. Setanta's exploits are above and beyond that of a 15 game player and a guy that's only been playing the game for 4-5 years. Exploits are a relative thing, and right now Setanta's exploits are well above where they should be. That's why he is so popular.

@#$%&! you Greg Ass .... oops sorry Greg Bum... ooops did it again, Greg Baum. Clueless idiot.

The comments about Setanta were a little bizarre, and don't take into account the experience difference. On top of that was where Baum mentioned about Carlton supporters booing Brown whenever he got the ball. I was at the game, and apart from the standard crowd efforts of trying to put goal-kickers off their shots, I didn't notice the crowd giving it to Brown.

All-in-all an unnecessary article.

Greg Baum is normally a good, insightful observer of the game. I was a little surprised at the venom he directed at Setanta. A bit out of character for him. Maybe he's offput by Setanta's pushing and shoving, and thinks that a 20 gamer should show a guy like Brown more respect...?

Anyway as others have said, in a freeflowing game with minimal crowding of the F50, Jono Brown is going to get 15 marks against any backman he comes up against, every time.

Not a fair article....Setanta is learning the game and Brown is the best in the business..
Santy will learn the push and shove at the start stuff is to be used sparingly on nuffies like Matthew lloyd, Richo etc who will react and lose focus.
A player like Brown makes a living out of intimidating opponents and Santy will learn on his type that its waste of time...and probably detracts from his own focus.

Yes i was surprised too. He is normally ok. However Gerard Healy and co had nothing but praise for the job Setanta did so go figure.

Even Dora got beat by Derm every now and again.

my annoyance in the article is in the fact that if it had have been Clement who got thrashed it would just have been about how great Brown is - Clement wouldn't have come in for any criticism

Baum is clueless as to WHY Carlton fans are cheering Setanta.

Baum is irrelevent from now on AFAIC.
