I got a call yesterday from Origin Energy. You've probably seen the adds on tv for 'Go Green for Footy'.

The deal is, if you sign up for Origin Energy's Green Gas/Electricity, not only do you get the Green Pack, including that luminous green mini Sherrin, but Origin also donates money to the club of your choice.

In my case, it was $27 to Carlton...not a lot, but every bit helps.

In terms of the deal itself, you get gas and electricity at the govt recommended rates (I was with Origin already, and my gas was 'green', but I was paying extra for it...$1 a week. With the new deal, it's actually cheaper for me). Only 'catch' is that you are on a 12 month contract, with a $44 exit fee if you want to break it.

So, if you want to help Carlton AND the environment...and let's face it, they are probably the two best causes on the planet just at the minute (along with Leeds Utd, but that cause is all but lost)...give them a call.

And no, I don't work for Origin!

Two years ago I switched to AGL for Carlton.... interesting.

Stuck with Alinta. Sponsor the Dockers I believe. Fortunately I rarely burn gas.


Although I emit it quite frequently.

On the subject of clean energy - during the height of the "Selwood - Headland" spat last week, in Perth there was a typical Eagles "feel good / propaganda" piece on Channel Ten which centred around Chris Judd's environmentally friendly new car (a Toyota Prious).

At the tail end of the story it was mentioned that the Eagles intend to be the 1st Carbon Nuetral team in the AFL. In my opinion the Eagles have enough of their plates at the moment to worry about their carbon emmissions. Plus I understand that VISY board are one the most environmentally advanced large organisations in Australia.

I feel there is some genuine mileage in leveraging on VISY boards Environmental and Sustainability policies to fast-track Carlton into becoming the AFL's first carbon nuetral team.

As a starting point we could include purchasing carbon credits as an option in membership packs, cease our affiliation with Nike in favour of a fair trade sports good manufacturer (as part of our sustainability policy), ensure that the re-development of Princes Park uses environmentally sound designs.....

All future building projects at Princes Park should also be as green as possible.

The proactive green angle could be a very positive one for Carlton in the immediate and long term.

I’m with Red Energy gas company there is no donation given to Carlton but it does give me 10% discount off my gas bill when I pay on time so I find there is a big saving, I do have my Electricity with Origin Energy but I’m waiting for Red Energy to become an electricity carrier and see if they will give the 10% discount on the electricity bill as well.

My club is not participating. Can I still go Green for Footy?
Yes. You can still join Green for Footy to reduce your home’s energy impact on our environment, even if your favourite club is not participating. In this case Origin will contribute $27.50 (incl. GST) on your behalf directly to the AFL to help them be the first sporting league in the world to become carbon neutral.

Unfortunately, looks like your money is just going to the AFL!!!

Go Red Origin go, at least with R O I’m sure that I’m reaping the full benefits and no I don’t work for Red Origin.
