I've always been really proud of the AFL not playing games on good friday, even at night.

Can there not be just one AFL / VFL tradition that's upheld?

I'd love there to be footy on Good Friday.

Even better, I'd love that footy to involve Carlton.

In the home of Catholicism, Italy, they play on Good Friday.

The AFL are the only competition who don't.

If 'tradition' is the only reason for not playing on Good Friday, then all the more reason to play.

I can take it or leave it for good friday. But the hyjacking of ANZAC day really pisses me off.

It should be reserved for the previous years grand finalists. Fair to all.

Good Friday, part of a 4 day mini holiday where allot of people go away with their family's.
I think the attendances across easter are always lower so will good Friday work, probably not...

I have always been spruiking in making Easter Monday as "our" blockbuster day.

I remember when we played the filth in 94 on this day (unfortunately, when McGuane kicked "that" goal) and we got something like 85K at the MCG.

We could make it Richmond V Carlton, but the stands will only pack out if Richmond has form.

Trust me - you play Carlton v Richmond exclusively at the G and you'll fill it up.

Good call Simon - I actually have never heard a reasonable argument stating why we don't play footy on Good Friday? As you say, if you don't like it then don't watch it.

I live in the U.S. and I was actually quite shocked that they play sport on Christmas Day!

Let's be honest, Australia is a secular country and it's time the AFL got with the times and recognised this.
I agree, bunks! Australia is no longer a solely Christian country, and as such should start acknowleging this by giving way to some of the "traditions" that are based solely on religious traditions .. look at the mention Jack Worrall said about football being played in Italy on Good Friday! If they can do it, why can't we?! But, as synners said, we're not Italy (actually, he said we're not America, but it's the same point).

And the ANZAC game is solely a money thing, based on one event in 1995. I am sure that if you based this draw on the club with the largest membership at the time of drawing up the fixture, it wouldn't be the Filth and Scum!

I'd be interested to see the top-5 membership clubs since 1995 at the time of drawing up the fixture to see whether the basis is on that or something else.

(I love the "age old tradition" quoted as the reason for this draw. If you base it on the clubs that were there during both of the 20th Century world conflicts, it wouldn't be these two clubs!)

That is a superb idea chucky, not sure if it's all yours, I hope it is, but that is PERFECT! I'm going to send that one in to the AFL I reckon.

Almost as perfect as Carlton v Richmond on Good Friday. ;)

I wonder if Chanel 7 would object to Channel 10 covering a live game against the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal?

Good thing that Channel 10 would show it. If Chanel 7's motor sports coverage is anything to go by, they'd probably leave the game with 2 minutes to go so they give us the 4:45pm Appeal Total.

That is a really good suggestion. It totally ends the monopolistic hijacking of the day by Essendon* and Collingwood, and yet still retains the 'showdown' and importance of the match.

Nope, not my idea. The SANFL do it.
