Post subject:  Squad by Origin

There has been plenty of discussion and debate in recent times about the quality of our list. Some people say we have done extremely well in the Draft/Trading system. Others claim we are still a few years behind most of the comp. It is interesting to look at the origin of our current side and how it was actually put together. We are starting to reap the rewards for the great work done by the club and particularly the recruiters when you consider the draconian penalties that we copped, guilty or not! Although we do have a clutch of early picks running around in a Navy Blue jumper, we are very well served by middle and late picks. I will start off this thread with the players selected in the squad for Round 4 against the Weagles, showing how we got them. We can then update the thread every week if/when there are changes to the squad. Most people will be surprised that we are even competitive let alone winning games when you realize how most of our squad are from picks lower than 20. :-D

National Drafts:

#1: Marc Murphy…Bryce Gibbs
#2: Andrew Walker
#4: Josh Kennedy
#9: Jordan Russell
#15: Simon Wiggins
#25: Adam Hartlett
#38: Brendan Fevola
#41: Luke Blackwell (F/S)
#42: Lance Whitnall: (F/S)
#45: Kade Simpson
#46: Jarrad Waite (F/S)
#67: Joe Anderson
#72: Bradley Fisher
#73: Ryan Houlihan

Trades:

Matthew Lappin
Heath Scotland

Pre Season Drafts:

Eddie Betts
Cain Ackland
Cameron Cloke

Rookie Drafts:

Bret Thornton
Adam Bentick
Andrew Carrazzo
Setanta O’hAilpin
Ryan Jackson

It is pretty amazing when you look at our squad this way. We simply do not have enough kids from the pointy end of the National Draft, but have done extremely well with late picks, the Pre Season Draft and particularly the Rookie Draft. Keep in mind the young talent coming through, were also not exactly in the early pick range, but the good news is that a number of them that are doing their apprenticeships, can play a bit. Have a squiz at the emerging talent: ;-)

National Drafts:

#17: Shaun Hampson
#19: Shaun Grigg
#20: Paul Bower
#35: Mark Austin
#36: Jake Edwards
#51: Clinton Benjamin
#77: Anthony Raso

Rookie Drafts:

Craig Flint
Aisake O’hAilpin
Ross Young
Sam Jacobs
Michael Jamieson

Definitely Blue Skies Ahead!

Actually I must admit I did make 1 mistake in 1976 and thought that I did again in 2001, but I was wrong! :P

So the mistake was that you thought you had made a mistake when you hadn't? :-D

It wasn't really a mistake. It was more of an oversight, because some Fwit told me I'd made a mistake and I believed them, so I was wrong, but not really a mistake! :P

So this is the breakup if there are no late changes to the 22 selected:

National Drafts:

#1: Marc Murphy
#1: Bryce Gibbs
#2: Andrew Walker
#4: Josh Kennedy
#9: Jordan Russell
#15: Simon Wiggins
#38: Brendan Fevola
#42: Lance Whitnall: (F/S)
#45: Kade Simpson
#46: Jarrad Waite (F/S)
#67: Joe Anderson
#72: Bradley Fisher
#73: Ryan Houlihan

Trades:

Matthew Lappin
Heath Scotland

Pre Season Drafts:

Eddie Betts
Cain Ackland
Cameron Cloke

Rookie Drafts:

Bret Thornton
Adam Bentick
Andrew Carrazzo
Setanta O’hAilpin

It just emphasises even more, that there is more to drafting than the early picks in the National Draft. We have done pretty well considering, but 3 or 4 more quality kids from the pointy end would just top it of nicely, don't you think? 8)

Thanks for that Deano, but feel free to remind me when he plays next year; just in case I forget!

Brizzy, good stuff. Two questions.

Any chance you can add what we traded next to the trade players (ie the pick number or the player traded - or even the pick # of the player we traded)?

Also can you do the same analysis for the last 3-4 premiership teams?

Not asking much am I??

Would be useful in seeing what it takes to win a premiership.

Added the Draft Picks traded for Skinny to the Aints & Bagpipes traded by the Carringbush.

The origins of the Eagles, Swans, Port & Lions will have to wait a while, but I'll have a crack at it when I get time.

BTW, check this same thread on CSC. Scroll down till you find Tommy. He has put some work in on the Aints lineup for tonight. It is easy to see that they got plenty of class from the pointy end that we haven't.

Good stuff Brizzy. I look forward to the analysis of premiership teams. Although the Aints have plenty of high draft picks, they haven't turned it into ultimate success, so to me that proves there's more to it than a bunch of high picks. Obviously luck with injuries plays a part as well.
