I want the #43 to be retired when Kouta decides to hang up the boots!

We need to be careful with this. According to my calculations, Tex has another 14 years of footy in him. :shock:

So that will make Jack Silvagni 26 when we draft him under the father-son rule and put him in the #1 worn by Serge and Steven. We should have retired the #1 knowing that Steve and his missus were churning out boys at the rapid rate. Having a Silvagni in another number is unthinkable. We will need them to be 1, 1A and 1B when the time comes. Although if one distorts the letters a bit we could make that 1, 14 1nd 18. So now we need to trade Tex in 2014 and retire the numbers 14 and 18 by 2015 and 2016. That means Fish will have to retire early due to shoulder problems and if we get Judd at the end of the year we can give him 18 on the condition he only play for the next 8 years. Hardly worth it. Having Judd for 8 years that is.

Sorry ryan, but if we were to start retiring numbers the following would all be retired before #43

Most jumpers are only retired for a limited period perhaps 1 or 2 years.

The Club has a policy of retiring guernseys of premiership players for 1 year. Not that much of an issue at the moment, as Kouta is the only one with day premiership glory. But in a few years it will become an issue again. I believe the club is also open minded to retiring other guernseys for 1 year for special cases on a case by case level, but it is firm that any retirement can be for 1 year only. That way a young kid can aspire to wear the champion's number.

By all means retire the jumper for one year out of respect for Kouta as he is a premiership player. But not for all time. With all respect, there have been plenty of better Carlton players in the last 50 years. It would do a disservice to the likes of John Nicholls (the best we have ever had), Jezza, Kernahan, Doull, David McKay, Bradley, etc to name a few. I've seen most of Kouta's and the above players games and apart from 10 or so stand out games he doesn't come near. Sure he has been cruely hampered by injury and family problems, but that's life.

I've said it before - Its the front of the jumper that matters - not the back!!!! Clubs with losing mentalities make a big deal about jumper numbers- St Kilda is great at it with the handing over of guenseys - i think that the tigers do it too. No jumper number is sacred - Good players and crap ones and club champions and blokes on the list for 2 years have worn all numbers.

yeah but Kouta is different.............. I dunno, maybe i biased. But Kouta is just magical. Not saying he's the greatest of all time, but i am saying that somebody will be hard-pressed to do that #43 justice that it deserves. Fev is doing the #25 justice. Walker is doing the #1 justice. But #43? Oh man, the things i saw in that #43 were just breath-taking! STUNNING! Stuff i haven't even seen Chris Judd do, and he could well be the GOAT! I don't think there will be anybody quite like kouta. And here's proof................ Anytime you see Judd go near the ball, everybody pays attention. It's freaky how much everybody pauses to see what he'll do! But Kouta..............................oh man,................to hear the crowd chant 'KOUTA' 'KOUTA' 'KOUTA' is something i've never heard before!

I hate the idea of 'retiring' a jumper. 1 or 2 seasons off, fine, but I really like the fact that Gibbs has the opportunity to fulfil in the #4 jumper what Judas and Livo couldn't, think about the brilliance of the #2 jumper, isn't it better to have your name on a locker after John Nicholls and Greg Williams, the legacy of a number is something that's carried forward. Dominic Fotia, that could have been you. Reflect on a number for a year or so, then give it to the next crop to add to the history.

Having Judd for 8 years that is. We could always give Walker 43, the the boys could wear 1, 21 and 31. Austin can wear a lower number by then also. A choice of 9,10 11,12,13 or 15 Blackwell takes 8 . That's actually a great idea - retire a number for a year or two! Explains why #16 was re-used so quickly (probably so we would forget a former occupant) But it would be interesting, if they retired numbers for good after a player achieved a certain milestone who would have what numbers now? So, who has scored a ton (surely 22 H Vallance came close)? Who has played more than 300 games (besides 11 B Doull & 21 C Bradley)? Which captains have guided us to 3, 4, or more flags? If they'd retired those numbers for good using only those criteria, who would have what numbers now? What other criteria could they use?
