This may be in the wrong spot (sorry mods)

but I was reading The Age on Tuesday, and saw the stats for the round. One which interested me was that our boy Marc Murphy led the comp for clearances last weekend (or maybe for the season - am unsure). Anyway, he had 19 clearances. The number after that suggested that 22 per cent of these clearances were effective. This put MM far lower than any of the other guys on the clearances list.

Given I can't remember MM wasting too many posessions, what does this statistic mean? Does it mean that he has only sent a clearance to the advantage of a team mate on 22 per cent of occasions? Is it a case of lies, damned lies, and statistics?

Sorry for the dumb questions - I was just puzzled

Who were the other top clearance getters with greater efficiency?

Can't seem to find these stats and don't have a copy of the paper.

The stat showed Smurph had 9 for the round at 22% efficiency and total of 17 clearances for the season.

He was compared to the following:

Dal Santo [Sinners] 9/56%/12
Bolton [Sydney] 9/56%/13
Black [Brissy] 8/63%/17
McDonald [Dees] 8/38%/15

In tackles, Carrazzo has 10/80%/27 - highest effective percentage of the players he was grouped with.

Yep. No idea. I doubt it's effective disposal, because that's a pretty lenient term.

Disposal to advantage? Clearance from 1st possession?

Good week for Carrots re: tackling, because he was constantly getting pinged for too high the previous two weeks. The ones I caught were all players ducking or going to ground. Soft as butter that new interpretation.

It's a major grievance of mine how the umpires allow a player to duck their heads into a tackle.

It should be outlawed.

Pisses me right off.

Pisses me off too DUC. It's quite interesting though, the AFL brought in this new interpretation about contact to the head to protect players with their head over the ball. But now we've got players deliberately ducking into tackles to milk a free kick. Anyone else see a potential for head injuries to increase as a result?

If the AFLPA can't tell their members that to keep doing that [ducking their heads] could result in a serious neck injury, then their morons.

Havig said that the umpires know when a player is ducking, which is why there is no report.

Call play on and leave it at that and I can bet you the 'injured' player will quickly swing back into action.
