Eddie McChin on 1 vs 100 said last night said that Collingwood has won the most VFL/AFL games than any other VFL/AFL side therefore are the most successful side in history.

Carlton's win loss ratio against all sides (except some of the new entrants) is greater than 50%. Wouldn't this mean Carlton have won the most VFL/AFL games?

Or has Collingwood only won the most because they were in the league longer?

I am sure someone on this site can prove Eddie McChin right or wrong? I am sure Eddie McChin would want out 15th and 16 premierships than the mantle of winning the most home and away games and losing the most Semi Finals.

Collingwoood has won 1,359 games.

Carlton has won 1,323 games.

Both clubs have been in the league since its inception in 1897.

They've won more but we've got a better head to head record.

Carlton

Filth

A pox on his argument

As if the most successful team is the one that finishes on top of the ladder at the end of each year. Its who wins the premiership, no one else. Everything else is just covering for not being good enough in Grand Finals....hey, Eddie?

Carlton, Essendon*, 16 Premierships.

DAYLIGHT

Collingwood 14 Premierships

Eddie is a tossbag. Well spoken and wealthy but thats just crap

I believed that the Filth have only won 13.

I stand corrected

I remember growing up in the 60's and always felt there was daylight between Carlton and the other 3 in terms of what counted # of flags won, it was:

Carlton 8
Essendon* 12
Melbourne 12
Collingwood 13

Then the tables slowly turned when we started to win them again after 20+ years:

1968 #9
1970 #10
1972 #11
1979 #12...we caught up to Essendon* and Melbourne
1981 #13...we were equal first
1982 #14...we had the most premierships
1983..........Essendon* #13
1984..........Essendon* #14, same as Carlton
1987 #15...we were further in front of the colliwobblers and infront of Bumbers.
1990 #Collinwood won their first since 1958 and #14
1993...........Essendon* cheated to win #15
1995 #16...we were infront of everyone again
2000..........Essendon* #16 and equal with Carlton.

So history does count, and flags moreso than general win loss ratio!

16 Carlton
16 Essendon*
14 Collingwood
12 Melbourne

DAYLIGHT

Lucky there's a site that tracks all of this stuff from a Carlton point of view:

Eddie may say they are the most successful in history, but what history, VFL/ AFL?

Carlton were playing for 28 years before Collingwood were even thought of.

Carlton were playing in the top comp. from it's inception,( pre Challenge Cup, Challenge Cup , founder member of VFA.)

In fact Carlton were the reason that Collingwood could enter the VFA at all, and Carlton donated their share of gate takings to help them out!

From 1864-1891 Carlton won at least 264 games.
1865, 1867, 1878 seasons stats missing.

From 1892 (Collingwood's VFA debut season) Carlton won another 25 games until the start of the VFL in 1897.
Collingwood won 45 games in the VFA

So Eddie,
You can add at least another 289 wins to Carlton's 1323 for a total 1612 wins, as against the Woods 1404

Blues AT LEAST 208 more wins.

HISTORY IS HISTORY, and Carlton have won more.
More games and Premierships.(23)

From what i know the Pies have the most wins followed by us in second place but Eddie its all about wining flags I would rarther 16 than 14, plus we have beaten them more than they have beaten us. As for Essendon* they have really on won 15 flags but they claim 16 in 1924 no grand final was played but coz they finished on top on percentage after a round robin series it was awarded to them. 1924 is the only year that no grand final was played.

can we factor in the amount of wins vs the amount of games played? Whats the overall winning percentages for both clubs? Keep in mind that even though we have been in the leage the same amount of time it doesn't mean the same number of games

This reminds me of a old article of mine.

Team of the Millenium

and this graph, cumulative points margin through time.

I haven't checked the latest numbers but I would be pretty sure that thanks to the last few poor years for the Blues, Collingwood would be ahead of us in terms of percentage of games won and cumulative points margin.

Still behind in premierships though. :-D

Looks like St. Kilda are finally trending upwards.

Amazing what a change of coach can do. :P

you can add 1897 VYS ... that year also saw a round-robin style finals series with essenscum winning on percentage ....

so essenscum has actually won 14 GFs

i seem to recall that on the eve of the game at PP against aints in 2002 (?) we were 1 win behind collingwood on the all time list. we got smashed by 90-something points and the rest has been, as they say, ... misery ... (that is of course until pratt switched on the lights ... )

What really surprises me about that graph is that Geelong are in 4th despite only winning 6 premierships. Funny to see Hawthorn's great teams of the 70s and 80s couldn't lift it to a +ve margin though. :-D

Actually he's just a wealthy tossbag - he still can't say "millionaire" properly.
