Judd and Kerr both top 20 picks with Cousin while a FS would have been first round.

I am against tanking though, but Judd, Kerr and Cousins were all rated top 20 picks, with Judd a priority pick.

This is rubbish - Judd was pick 4 and Kerr was pick 18 - we took Wiggo at 15 that year- we could have taken Kerr... We took Livingston at 4 a year or two before. No need to tank if you have a very well resourced recruitment department. As long as you have a good core group and a strong club you do not need to come last IMHO. Again the difference in success between the Saints and Adelaide, Swans and Weagles is the proof.

Their other early pick that year was Ashley Sampi (#6)

......

The trick to building a premiership team is having as many guns as you can, and squeezing genuine quality out of your middle tier.

Tanking = greater % of guns.... but so is developing the talent on your list.

All great teams convert late picks and rookies into regular performers and/or guns

Also have a system that is sustainable and the players to back it up helps....

I still dont know why we debate Tanking when we havnt even gone past 10 Rounds of the season lucky we not Demons or Tigers they gonna be hard to out tank with that theory of people.

A team will not purposely tank why would they as those same players who did that would end up being delisted at the end of the year or the coaching panel will get changed ect

maybe round 18 if they have 2 wins they may look to rest players / get players to have early operations for injuries or playing some of the kids ect

But this discussion should be in round 18 not round 4

The negative affects of poor seasons
* affects sponsorship
* Affects players and slows there progress / developement
* Affects membership
* negative effect on player trades / recruiting
* continuous failures affects the morale off field
There are so many negatives from purposely tanking why would you want to support this

if supporters go to games like Gavroman wishing the team to loose and then taunt the opposition saying we will get picks 1 and 2 whats the point of supporting a team if thats how they go out to play
Luckily the team dosnt go out with that mentality

if the team plays competatively or is injury affected and has a poor season fair enuff .

Once you have collected a core group of talent/stars - it is as much picking good players via Rookie draft, and second / third round picks. This comes down to how well the club is run - in all departments.

I had a look at the drafts since 2001 in regard to four succesfull interstate teams: Weagles, Swans, Crows and Port. Have a look how they actually did not have that many high picks, and how they recruited well with lower picks. On top of this - good trading is also important.

Compare the below list with how many good picks the Aints had...

So tanking can help - but it will NOT buy you a premiership. The issue is far more complex then that.

2000 Pre-Season:

4 James Byrne Glenelg Football Club - Adelaide Crows

7 Ben Fixter NSW-ACT U18 - Sydney Swans

8 Wade Chapman Sydney Swans - Port Adelaide

12 Andrew Cowell Woodville-West Torrens Football Club - Adealaide

2000 National Draft:

5 Andrew McDougall Perth Football Club - West Coast

7 Laurence Angwin Dandenong Stingrays - Adelaide

12 Shaun Burgoyne Port Adelaide Magpies - Port Adelaide

18 Daniel Kerr East Fremantle Football Club - West Coast Eagles

20 Kane Cornes Glenelg Football Club - Port Adelaide

50 Domenic Cassisi East Fremantle Football Club - Port Adelaide

52 Amon Buchanan Geelong U18 - Sydney Swans

53 Hayden Skipworth West Torrens Football Club - Adelaide Crows

67 Graham Johncock Port Adelaide Magpies - Adelaide Crows

2001 Pre-Season:

3 Troy Wilson East Perth Football Club - West Coast Eagles

6 Stephan Tingay Melbourne - Sydney Swans

12 Adam Richardson West Adelaide Football Club - Adelaide Crows

2001 National Draft

3 Chris Judd Sandringham Dragons - West Coast Eagles

6 Ashley Sampi South Fremantle Football Club - West Coast Eagles

12 Brent Reilly Calder Cannons - Adelaide

22 Mark Seaby West Perth Football Club - West Coast

28 Mark Powell Murray Bushrangers - Sydney

29 Lewis Roberts-Thomson NSW/ACT Rams - Sydney

38 Ashley Hansen Oakleigh Chargers - West Coast Eagles

2002 Pre Season

5 Trent Hentschel Woodville-West Torrens Football Club Adelaide Crows

2002 National Draft

5 Jarrad McVeigh NSW-ACT U18 - Sydney Swans

6 Steven Salopek Dandenong U18 - Port Adelaide

16 Stephen Gilham Oakleigh U18 - Port Adelaide

37 Brent Staker NSW-ACT U18 - West Coast Eagles

53 Adam Selwood Bendigo Bombers - West Coast Eagles

56 Robert Shirley Adelaide Crows - Adelaide Crows

64 Nick Malceski Eastern U18 - Sydney Swans

68 James Begley St. Kilda - Adelaide Crows

2003 Pre Season

3 Craig Bolton Brisbane Lions - Sydney Swans

2003 National Draft

11 Beau Waters West Adelaide Football Club - West Coast Eagles

14 Fergus Watts Sandringham U18s - Adelaide Crows

16 Josh Willoughby Glenelg Football Club - Sydney Swans

2004 Pre Season

12 Josh Mahoney Williamstown Football Club - Port Adelaide

2004 National Draft

8 John Meesen Geelong Falcons - Adelaide

11 Adam Thomson - Sturt Football Club - Port Adelaide

Yet those 4 Coaches have only won one Flag each.....Pagan has 2.

Who's to say they'll never emulate that?

Yep agreed

Look at some of the good players in the Lions / Eagles. All good prospects none of them high draft picks

Lions: Stiller Rookie draft / adcock pick 33 / riscotelli pick 61

West coast: Rosa pick 29 / Priddus Rookie elevation / Jamie Graham Rookie Elevation / Nicoski Rookie elevation

Some examples what assists these Kids to fast tracked there developement

Quality senior players

Lions have a core of senior players like brown / Black / power / Johnson / Lappin and co

Eagles have core of Judd / Kerr / Embly / Steglein / Hunter the list goes on

is it any wonder these kids get a easy run in the seniors and can advance so much quicker

Everyone looks to the Blues needing to get picks 1 and 2 and we need to get 10 first round picks when we prob have a decent core of kids but we need some strong senior guys now to help bring these Kids through.

What would a Judd or Del Santo bring to the club
Other than being star players in there own right the impact they have on the younger talent is immence

this is where we have a big difficiency not in the kids we have but in the seniors who can can positively imfluence the kids

meanwhile opposition supporters are picking out Simmo or Fev as 3rd rounders, saying "why didn't we pick them?!"

the only one that really hurts is Sporn (11) Burgoyne (12)
an anorexic effigy of Phillip Seymour-Hoffman: yes, a footballer: no
the mind boggles as to what we saw in him.
