I don't think Fevola was a smoky. Everyone just avoided him because they thought he was a flower.
I wonder what gave them that impression

We are quick to condemn over wasted draft picks (eg. Livo at pick 4 ???) but who was responsible for Fevola at 38 - surely one of the great selections. Was it Shane O'Sullivan ? |

I believe it was O'Sullivan. Much maligned for his recruiting, but Fevola at 38, Hamill and Houlihan both in the 70's. Was much better later in the draft at finding your true smokey. |

Watch the documentary called "The Draft". Follows Fev, Rama and Headland around before they get drafted. IIRC Kinnear Beatson, who was the Brisbane recruiting manager at the time, wasn't a huge fan of Fevola's attitude. But yes, all credit goes to Seagull for the drafting of Fev. |

Fev won the goalkicking award in the under 19s (and reserves I believe in his first year with us), and as a casual observer of the draft then (without great websites set up), I was completely surprised he went as late as he did. Draft people always said he had an aweome kick for goal, deadly accurate, and could take a great mark. But, as it has been said before, his attitude and personality let him slip down the pecking order of the draft. |

He was then thrown into attack, and turned it on. |

Fisher was O'Sullivan the 98 draft, like the 96 and 97 drafts were unique because clubs could pick 1 17 year old player each. Fevola and Embley were 17 year olds.... so the number they were picked is largely irrelevant..... We couldn't have picked Embley because we had already picked Fevola. Also, it wasn't as though 37 players were considered better. More interesting would be how many 17 year olds were picked ahead of Fevola.... now THAT I can't remember off the top of my head .. but probably 8-10

was just about to mention the same thing. he's played just as big, if not a bigger role than shane o'sullivan in the performances fev's produced for the navy blue. |

all the Credit must be Given to Pagan and him alone!!!! Fevola at 38 was a waste of a player who turned out not a worthy one at 38 at all...Lets Remember he was gone.....Wayne Britts had him gone... he just wasnt interested.....But somehow Pagan changed him.... it wasnt just a change of attiude or commitment or the promise to stay on the list, but it was more than that....It was like a Spiritual Rebirth where Fevola has dramatically reached his peak and still going at such a short time....Quite amazing!!! Pagan is also responsible for reviving Holihan from an ordinary player to a more fit play Maker...... having said that, i really dont like Pagan, never liked him, but he must get the Credit

It still took two or three years after Pagan for Fev to reach his best. It didn't happen overnight. |

Brittain was on SEN on Sunday. Basically said Fev was gone if he (Brittain) was not sacked first. Said the first 1/2 Fev on Saturday was the Fev he had while at Carlton. At this stage I got down on my knees and hailed Pigs Arse for giving the Arse to Mr Brittain. |

Shane O'Sullivan much maligned on these forums for his recruiting. Unfortunatley most of the time his hands were tied by the Match Committee (ie. David Parkin's philosophy) of recruiting mature bodies from the SANFL and WAFL (who mostly turned out to be duds) or mature bodied TAC players who had no upside like Chatfield and Vance  .
When O'Sullivan was allowed his choice of player they have generally turned out OK - and we have him to thank for plucking Simpson and Fisher from the 2002 National Draft, and dont we have to be entirely thankful for that - he should be retrospectively given a sainthood for his contribution there.
