This book. I decided on the back of the 80s lollies posts I should scan the only book I read until I was, oh, 24...

Look closely and you'll see a young hammer's handwriting and Ian Aitken's signature. Not sure what's worth more these days...

Look even closer and you'll find Jeff Hook's trademark 'hook' on every page. A memory in every sentence this book...

Speaking of footybooks from yesteryear, does anyone remember - or even have - a book called "The Footy Fans Handbook" from 1981/82?

Full of great yarns - especially about a team called the "Stonybrokers".

If anyone remembers it or has one floating around, pls let me know.

and the David Parkin bit was abit trippy..won as a few premierships which was fantastic but mortaged our future..

Yeah reading through it again I thought 'geez, I wish I could draw'. Would have a crack at writing a new one.

"At training, Campo tries to give all the girls his autograph"
"But my favourite player is Brendon Fevola, that's why I haven't washed my hair all season"
"David Clarke will retire from football after playing nearly 10 games for the Blues. It won't be the same at Carlton without Clarke. Thank @#$%&!'.

Oh and of course the easiest...

"When Chris Bryan kicks the ball, he kicks it so far that everyone shouts WOOOOF"

I have a copy of Footy: An Aussie Rules Dictionary by Keith Dunstan, and illustrated by Jeff Hook (seeing the hooks in the pics brings back almost as many memories).

There's quite a lot of nostaligia in the pages, as they all refer to the VFL, Fitzroy, Waverley.....I could go on....

"At least David Clarke go to play more games at Carlton than his father did"

"Does Fevola know he has his hand on my breast?"

"Telstra Dome is great on wet days but the food is very expensive"

"My favourite players used to be Manton Beaumont and Hulme, they all got the flick..I hated that. Now my favourite players are Lance , Bowyer and Plemming"

"Each time we play North we get killed by Wells.. he was supposed to play for us but we got caught cheating"

"My mum tells me Campo used to be a good player but that was before i was born"

How good was that? I'd forgotten the simple joy of looking for and finding the hook in the paper every day.

Love the way it has a political message too, telling us how shit waverley was.

Also love what I will dub "The Doull Prophecy". It hasn't been the same since he retired, has it?

The joy of keeping it simple.

I remember my duffle coat with no's 4 (Buzz) & 14 (Ashamn) on the pockets AND a big no. 9 (Hunter) on the back. Also had a few badges & some tags with the players names stiched down the sleeve by mum.

Also remember my uncle making me smuggle 3 or 4 cans down each arm of my duffle coat at a night grand final against the Bumbers.

ahhh.........memories of my youth

Loved that bok when I was a kid.

Here's one.

"Dad tells me all the time that when he was a boy you'd support your team win lose or draw and you actually went every week hoping to see them win...then he gets that faraway look in his eye and says how times have changed"

Vintage years for mustaches & premierships - Also amazing how Harmesy used to be the teenage girl's favourite - he looks a bit worse for wear now.

My Primary School had the entire set of those books. I don't think anyone ever read the Fitzroy one

There was a series before Footy Kids 2 as well, which was imaginatively called "Footy Kids".

The books were actually called "I barrack for....."

The books themselves were published by the same people that did "Country Kids" and "City Kids".

To remember Country Kids / city Kids you are either a youngster or an oldster like me who still reads those regularly as a writing piece to enthuse others.

Classic comments here, Synbad.

Champagne comedy.
