Great Article and i still unsure why he wasnt Captain not in context of Whitnals form but he seems to show more on and off the field Anyway great Article http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/m ... 41894.html Tells us a bit more why maybe the Blues struggled in the past couple of years Quote: "Down at Carlton, we were probably seen a bit as the party boys. Two years ago, we won the night premiership, we went out and celebrated like it was a day one and went on a two-day bender. This year, we won it and not one player went out. "It was probably every third game the boys would go out and have a big night together. That's just what we did. Going back three years ago, it was probably every second week that the boys would go out. "Some nights, you'd have big nights, like out till 5 (am). Some people would. It'd normally start at the Great Northern (Hotel), we'd start there as a side and have dinner and then the boys would hit the nightclubs after that, I guess. Also speaks of wanting to sign up and stay a blue and is the fittest he has ever been Quote: With contract talks recently opening between the Blues and Stevens' management after his brilliant pre-season and best-afield performance in round one, the midfielder would put pen to paper happily tomorrow. "Once and for all, I want to put it to bed. I want to be at Carlton. I've come here, I've been through the hard times and I think the good times are going to start to come through now," he said

I know it's easy to say now and it is still only very early in the season but it would have been an absurd decision to trade him. I genuinely believe that on his day Nick is one of the best midfielders in the competition and the extra help he is getting and will continue to get now in the middle will really allow him to prove just how good a footballer he is. He'd be silly to leave Carlton now anyway, why would he be there when times are tough and then want to leave just when things are starting to turn around and there is the promise of future success? I'm just glad we have him as he is a gem! |

Please no more than a three year contract from the club. Four years is too long, it is amazing how many players have big years in the last year of their contract. They must not be allowed to get into too much of a comfort zone. |

Please Dick over-rule the Whitnall decision and allow Stevens to be captain. It’s obvious he is the best man for the job. |

If Fat was as Carlton as he says he is, he should ask to stand down and for Stevens to be made captain... |

I know this may peeve a few of you off, but reading that article has made me realise why they chose Lance ahead of Stevo. He states that he didn't train as hard as he could, lates nights and heavy booze and dissapointed not to have gone to the pies. No really the stuff captains are made of is it? Maybe Pagan said to Stevo, get fit, ease up the booze, commit to Carlton and have a blinder this year - Next year you will be Captain? |

Are you happy that Steven admitted he drunk too much for two or three years of his contract that we where paying him big money. Is this the type of person you want as captain. His contract is up and now he is as fit as he has ever been sounds like he is thing about a new contract. |

Great article. Actually vindicates a lot of people's opinions of his efforts in the past couple of years - openly admits he didn't train as well as he could have, looked after himself, or took care of his post game recovery. If he's doing that now we've just got one of the most valuable recruits for 2007 and beyond. |

His contract is up and now he is as fit as he has ever been sounds like he is thing about a new contract. fair points, got to admit, it was the first thing that sprang to mind reading that article. still, he is playing good football at the moment, and we would be made to lose him for nothing at years end. |

I must admit, i haven't really been a fan of Stevens, especially last year. But i think he has handled this situation (missing the captaincy) better than anybody else could. If nothing else, it has made him that much more determined and i hope his form continues. |

..listen, i think what he's done is a good, courageous call.. ....alot of ppl will naturally leech onto his admissions and bleed him dry for it.. ..but what he's done is own up, take full responsibility with no dilution.. ..you have to remember that initially he got picked up by the club he didn't want to go to.. ..he wanted out of port, and highlighted stinky collin'wood as his preference.. ..the stinky pies, cos they're stinky,, offered port just shite for the trade.. ..port naturally didn't bite and cut stevens loose..we luckily snapped him up.. ..he came to a shite club, both off and on field.. ..then, he had to go about carrying the club up until now, with very very little support and at times less gratitude.. ..playing while injured (out of obligation perhaps), team culture that he entered into, and just depressed resignation to the futility of the club for those years would be a huge drain on anyone.. ..he admitted to things which i dare say alot of the team was likewise guilty of..fev's another that has admitted to drinking too much, not training seriously etc etc.. ..and there's a big doubt as to them both being the only culprits of this.. ..but they've smartened up, they have a club behind them that will now truely support it's players..and so likewise they're more commiteed..it's a two way street.. |

Everybody can read this and develop a different opinion, but if Lance had come out with a similar interview, people will be jumping up and down. This article shows (for me) why I didn't want Stevens as captain. Lance is Carlton to his bootstraps with his family association with the club. Stevens has wasted two years and now he is carving them up - why? Because his next contract depends on it. |

I think its not just a reflection of Stevo but of the whole Group who partied went out late and drank May also tell us more of the reason why the Blues performed below par last couple of seasons And if you state that Stevo is not the ideal candidate for Captain Isnt it a reflection of the Capatin over last 2 seasons that allowed this activity to go on.. No point taking shots at anyone it happened it answers a few questions of the last couple of seasons ... and looks like 2007 is a new outlook So lets clean the slate and go forward with a look for success not failure |

I thought Stevens being honest about something that a majority of the players do [boozing and late nights] is to be commended and not condemned. He is a much better communicator than Red and although Red has the football brains TM, Stevens knows how to speak to the players and rev them up. This was illustrated on Sunday night when the umpire pinged him for something so ridiculous in front of the Richmond goals - he vented his spleen at the umpire and then told the other players to calm down and to get back to the job, which they did. I'm not advocating Stevens over Red but rather joint captains, which Denis was not a fan of but loved having 11 players in the leadership group. |
