Post subject:  A Whitnall Theory...

I'm not trying to defend Big Red, I think he was ordinary tonight and question both his position in todays game and the decision to make him captain (the romantic in me agrees but the realist holds out grave fears).

Anyways, I think part of his very poor game tonight was the fact Gaspar was on him. As a backman I do not rate him and at 30 he is definitely on his last legs - admittedly he is more than capable than keeping up with Lance though... and here-in lies the rub, he is not the creative run-off type player that Lance can exploit by losing and creating an option whilst his opponent hunts the ball.

Lance is not the perfect athletic specimen but there are not many players at the elite level that regularly beat their opponents with pure athleticism... a fair component is always skill, reading the play and run off the ball. Gaspar, with his rather tenuous grasp on a starting 18 position with the tigers played a 'hard-tag' role on Whitnall, meaning that without the athleticsim that a Waite posseses for example, he was unable to use his football brain (God I hate that term... and the fact I sound like Danny Frawley when I say it) to be of value to the team.

Discuss. (Is it the 6 bourbons talking or does this theory hold any water?)

He has been below par the entire year. Luckily for him he is captain. Expect him to pick it up in the next few weeks.

I always thought Lance with his physical shortcomings could still survive in the forward line, but he's looking more and more lost down there. He was successful last year but I don't want to go back to seven man defences just for the benefit of Lance.

It was great to see JK, Fev, Fish and Waitey line up in the fwd 50 at the start of the 4th quarter it meant we were trying to win the game and I want that attitude to continue, having Lance down back is in contrary to this. The fact is if Lance can't operate as a target in the forward line then his use to the team is non-existent and he's standing in other people's way. If he's not fit enough he should be listed as injured and forced to complete another a preseason to compensate for the one he just missed.

Too many double negatives, might lead to a negative reality inversion.

Its not a mystery whats happened to Lance.
It was on the cards.
While Mr Pagan has been bulking up our players to play collision style football.. you will notice players look leaner today than they have over the last few years .. and that is because speed is king and with the rules changing .. collision is out...
Now as the game gets faster and faster.. and youll notice that the recruiters have an eye for speed.. and most of the kids that we had coming in and other clubs have had coming in are speedy...
Alot of these speedy kids havent even played a game yet... but they will.. and they will make the game speedier again.

Lance struggled last year... i dont give aRats that he was voted by some bananas as BnF the fact is he wasnt our most effective footballer and quite often we had to move him around and away... and most of the time he was playing as a spare man...
As the team improves and the kids mature and the game gets speedier Lance has less spots to play in.... not quite tall enough for KP (Setanta Fevola Waite and Kennedy have him covered) and not fast enough for a flanker... (everyone in the league has him covered)... there are less and less spots for him to play in.

His REAL problem is he cant get and maintain a fitness that can at least have him competitive....

Now we hear Denis is going to "stick by Lance"... of course he will... its just another shithouse Denis decision that compromises this football team.
We have a lame captain... a guy who is completely uninispiring and has no real position.

My beef id it was obvious it was going to come to this..., the game changes and is fluid... but whats disturbing is we have a coach and MC who cant see the obvious trends in modern day footy.
Im hoping the Pratt changes can rectify stupidity!!!

Gasper got a good chunk of possession running forward of the ball.

Not always when on Lance though.

As I said during the NAB Cup I'm prepared to wait until rd 5 or 6 to properly judge him

But yeah, had a shocker tonight, can't argue with that.

People always say that Whitnall's "footy smarts" make up for his lack of pace.

Problem is, the game is constantly getting faster but Whitnall is not going to get any smarter.

Despite whatever fitness problems he may have, that lame pass into the forward line in the last qtr was horrible - as well as the lame attempt at a mark on the members wing in the first qtr. He is a worry that's for certain. I can't see a spot for him apart from FF in the square or on the bench in his current form. Do we give him some time to gain form?? I don't know if you can do that in the modern game.....

??

You mean the handball receives when standing still in the centre square? That must have been his hard running, pinpoint disposal and creativity cutting us to shreds... thought is was Krakeur/Foley/Deledio/Tuck/other speedy little bastards!

If Hartlett and or Edwards put in some big performances for the Bullants, there will be some real pressure on Lance

Jars mentioned earlier that no Afl captain has ever been dropped and I dont doubt him but 2 more games like this from Lance and it must surely be the ants or a 'serious training mishap' moving him onto the LTI.

To watch the most derided tigers player towel up our captain is not good, in fact his presence on the field has become cringeworthy
