2005 Wizard Cup GF Squad

Carlton: Andrew Walker, Digby Morrell, Luke Livingston, Kade Simpson, Justin Davies, Lance Whitnall, Brett Johnson, Barnaby French, Matthew Lappin, David Teague, Scott Cmporeale, Glen Bowyer, Eddie Betts, Cory McGrath, Callum Chambers, Nick Stevens, Brendan Fevola, Adrian Deluca, Ian Prendergast, Heath Scotland, Jordan Bannister, Bret Thornton, Ryan Houlihan, Simon Wiggins, Trent Sporn, Karl Norman, Anthony Koutoufides, Andrew Carrazzo

Of this squad of 28, 16 won;t play on Saturday night. Of these, 13 players are no longer at Carlton, while 2 players are still at Carlton (Teague, Bannister) but will have very limited senior game time in 2007 and 1 is injured/not considered (Wiggins). That's 16 players turned over in 2 years out of a squad of 28. Of these, besically 13 of these guys are total hacks who would never win you a flag. French and Campo could play, jury still out on Wiggins.

Digby Morrell,
Luke Livingston
Justin Davies
Brett Johnson,
Barnaby French
David Teague,
Scott Camporeale,
Glen Bowyer
Cory McGrath
Callum Chambers
Adrian Deluca,
Ian Prendergast,
Jordan Bannister
Trent Sporn,
Karl Norman,
Simon Wiggins

This is last week's squad and likely squad for this week

Carlton Squad 1. Andrew Walker, 2. Jordan Russell, 3. Marc Murphy, 4. Bryce Gibbs, 5. Josh Kennedy, 6. Kade Simpson, 7. Adam Bentick, 8. Lance Whitnall, 9. Jason Saddington, 10. Dylan McLaren, 11. Cain Ackland, 12. Matthew Lappin, 14. Brad Fisher, 16. Shaun Grigg, 17. Setanta O’hAilpin, 18. Paul Bower, 19. Eddie Betts, 23. Adam Hartlett, 24. Nick Stevens, 25. Brendan Fevola, 28. Cameron Cloke, 29. Heath Scotland, 30. Jarrad Waite, 32. Bret Thornton, 33. Ryan Houlihan, 38. Ryan Jackson, 43. Anthony Koutoufides, 44. Andrew Carrazzo

New Players (16)

2. Jordan Russell,
3. Marc Murphy,
4. Bryce Gibbs,
5. Josh Kennedy,
7. Adam Bentick,
9. Jason Saddington
10. Dylan McLaren
11. Cain Ackland,
14. Brad Fisher,
16. Shaun Grigg,
17. Setanta O’hAilpin,
18. Paul Bower,
24. Adam Hartlett,
28. Cameron Cloke,
30. Jarrad Waite,
38. Ryan Jackson,

That's a way better 16 players if you ask me. 4 new first round picks, 3 new second round picks, plus Waite, Sentanta and Bentick. Probably the only weakness is in the ruck division. I think this clearly shows the improvement of the list over the last two years and also starkly illustrates why we finished last in 2005!

This is what I'm worried about concerning this week. Last time we won the Wizard Cup we were able to rely on:

- Campo's hardness at the contest and winning the contested ball
- Deluca's strong hands and marking in the contest
- Prendergast's disposal by foot and guaranteed Supergoals (though all jokes aside he will live on in Carlton folklore for 'that goal')

This current squad just can't compete with that. Sigh!

Good post Sticks...........................

Well, looking back on it, Callum Chambers pretty much got us to the Wizard Cup grand final in 05'. He was on fire!

Livo looked like becoming the player we'd all hoped he'd become.

Davies had flashes of brilliance, but we all knew he had that in him (just not the courage to follow it though)

I never liked Prenda, and i pissed myself in shock and amazment when he kicked that supergoal (listen to Eddie's commentary...........even HE was shocked!)

Basically..............................FEV won that game with some ok support from the likes of Thornton & Stevens.

This time is different.

Setanta is in Livo's place this time around......................only difference is he is coming of good form BEFORE the NAB Cup started - Whereas Livo was just plain Crap before & after the Wizard Cup.

Simpson is the player Davies SHOULD have been had he had the balls & heart!

I'd take a Cloke or any other ex-Collingwood scum player ANYDAY of the week in preferance to Prenda.

And the main difference is.........................We now have Murphy !

I like our 07' team! :-)

if we win this one...it will mean a lot more to us than the 2005 one did....knowing most of these players will be there when we push the finals...

He may have had an average career, but Ian Prendergast was the ants pants that night.

From there on in, to me, he has always been known as the Iceman.

talent level in the 07 squad is streets ahead.

The talent of our team of draft picks has is so far ahead of the recycled and dud 2000 / 2001 draft picks mob in 05.

I think that it isnt so much physical, but a mental thing that makes the difference.

either you have it or you dont.

For example - Livo was a real nice guy and many wanted him to become a key defender. He bulked up and tried - but ultimately- but just couldnt make the grade.

Others like Morrell - I think he was stiff to get delisted and would still be a good backup in the forward line - but this would be at the expense of blooding another young player with that elusive star quality that we need

- hard descisions had to be made and the dice rolled again in favour of youth...

Teddy deserved that game he played that night - and even though he will never go down as a Carlton Champion - he will go down as a Champion Gentlemen, someone who always gave 100% out on the track, on the ground and when meeting and greeting the fans.

And yes phoenix - he will be known as the "Iceman" after his supergoal in that Wizard Cup Final - and something that he can tell his grandkids. :-D

Agreed Agro, Prenda appeared a nice bloke, as most of them are. You've gotta feel for these blokes who had to run out onto the MCG/TD each week completely out of their depth. A team can hide 1, 2 or 3 of these blokes and get away with it, but we had 12-14 of them. It wasn't their fault, but man, it must have been hard work.

Our new talent will ease the pressure from the middle tier making their lives alot easier. blokes like Lappin, Scotto, Stevens will be able to play with stacks more confidence knowing they now have the quality around them.

Great post SAS87

When you put it as clearly as that it really shows how far the list has improved in the space of just 2 years.

It's obviously a much younger & more promising side & for that reason even though I was initially a bit ho hum about this year's NAB Cup, I really want the boys to win this now. Having said that I don't think Saturday night will be a walk in the park for Carlton. All the talk with Bris so far has been about their youth but with Power Black Bradshaw Brown we are really going to have our hands full. Notting's playing well too.
