The Sunday Age article about footballer's behaviour mentioned a Carlton player who supposedly played under the influence and later became a dealer. Now I have no idea who that was but it did remind me of the story of a Carlton player much older who played in the Barassi days and supposedly took to the field far too close to his last joint in a match against Hawthorn at Glenferrie. This incident was later used by David Williamson in his great great play "The Club", and also mentioned in a story about this player in Garry Hutchinson's excellent book about late 70s / early 80s football "From the Outer". I'm not naming the player but anyone with Carlton knowledge of that time should know who I mean What I would like to know is if this reallly happened!!! or is it a footy myth. Were any of our more senior posters at the game and can verify the story at least on what they saw?, or have more inside knowledge Grateful for your assistance. |

The journalist referred to him as one of our greatest finals players. You don't have to be the ultimate Carlton historian to work out who the player might be. |

And another thing, I don't care too much what the player did off the field during his playing days - what would be alarming though is if, as the article suggests, the ex-player is still dealing to current-day players. |

tim powell is another name that could be bracketed with Sholl and Athorn in terms of great finals players Re that article, I think it is crap journalism to allude to players and not mention names. If it's fact, and you want to write about it, name the player/s. Otherwise, say nothing. The fact that most of us over a certain age know who the character in The Club was based on means that this person, and all of his teammates, are tainted by a story that may or may not be based on fact. It just leads to people who had nothing to do with it having fingers pointed at them unfairly. |

Well according to David Williamson the player was Tasmanian - the star Tasmanian recruit. My motivation for asking the question is to see if there is any evidence for this event or is it purely a story. As it is a part of Carlton history / folklore it would be interesting to know. As no one so far on this site seems to have seen the incident (or are owning up to it) I will have a trawl of the newspapers of the time when I have a chance |

The Club was on Fox Classics on Wednesday night. I didn't know that part of the story was based on a real life incident. One guy at my footy club always plays, and trains, stoned. |

Unfortunately tommi, he literally is ALWAYS stoned, so I have no idea if he would be better or worse if he wasn't. He goes okay though, regardless. Perhaps he would be hopeless if he didn't have a smoke before a game? |

I think the alleged source of inspiration for the star recruit in The Club is a different person to the one mentioned in the article - but this underlines my point - without naming names every big name player from that era (and we had a few) is unfairly put under a cloud |
