I think the AFL who make a lot of money from the football fans should bring every club to have a reserve team, that they help each club out with in money costs if it cost a lot to have, they had a reserve team for like nearly 50 years or more before.

I reckon this 12/10 rule is a joke,it must have cost several players picked in the draft, their jobs.I'm sure if the 21 players who were not in the 22,were playing in the reserves with several top up players, they would do a lot better and be more confident and if they were cut by the club after a few years, they could still play as a top up player and could be picked up by the club in a new draft pick who played a minimum of games for a club and that club had first choice if the guy was like 22 now and showing something.

I like the idea.

The concept raises a lot of questions though. If lists are lifted to 55 where does the money to pay these guys come from? Not to mention the extra burden on travel costs if the seconds is a national league. Even the eastern seaboard league would mean extra travel costs for the Lions, Swans and Kangaroos. ;)

True.

For that reason I couldn't see it becoming national.

The AFL would have to subsidise the comp.

When the seniors are playing interstate or on a Saturday, the reserves could play in Melblourne at a different time slot (not to clash with the TV coverage) or on a Sunday. I'm sure the Carlton reserves, with the squad in one team rather than 2 (Ants 1sts and 2nds) would appeal to supporters moreso than the current format= revenue stream.

For it to work properly though, having a national reserves comp would be a great nod to the old days of suburban footy and having an honest curtain raiser for the main event.

8 quarters of football at TelstraDome in one day.

The Curator and Collo are both having heart attacks as we speak.

And I am laughing so much I have fallen off my chair.

Haha, imagine a double header ... that'd be 16 quarters of footy. :P

It's a fascinating idea, but very difficult and expensive to execute properly.
That said, I'd love to see the seconds running round somehwere like Princes Park vs the Colligwood seconds.

Have to first work out if the Carlton reserves coach's office would be on the same side of the ground as the senior coach's office...

dont know how its more expensive for players wages are already accounted for.. it can get expensive if injuries mount and top up players are required on top of injury payments.

I would be happy just to see the U18 's play before the main game for some entertainment value, for the kids to experience the big venues, and for supporters to watch the next generation.

What's a club list now, 38-40 players or something, with veterans. If there's a list of 55 players as the article suggests, well, there's up to 15 more salaries that aren't accounted for.

That's right Camelboy. So between now and when it happens the AFL have to sort out the details.

Wouldn't it be great to have curtain raisers at each game featuring our 2nd 22?

Now that's value for money!

Lets get back to the good old days when we were entertained for far less outlay than we pay today with only one game.

Bring back value for money.

Stuff the Telstra Dome surface, it'll still be better than most VFL grounds ever were.

Two things have come out clearly....

AFL is thinking about it
There WILL NOT be curtian raisers.

Seems what the AFL is saying and what the fans are saying are two different things.

PROBABLY what's happening is the VFL has gone it alone with a few things recently and with Gannon retiring and a new CEO imminent, the AFL is doing a bit of sabre rattling

The best part about a Reserves team would be an extra 22 players playing in the Navy Blue.
