Post subject:  Carlton vs Kangaroos - NAB Semi (Pre-Match Discussion)

I'll be at a wedding Saturday night so will miss the game, but I'm tipping a Carlton win. Kangas are wanting the NAB Cup in a big way so it will be a good test again for us.

Could be a chance to give young Gibbs some more game time on young Thomas or Campbell. Not too worried about the Kangas talls anymore, the structure we have down back looks tall and very athletic to compete.

For a team that started pre-season at the end of round 22, they didn't run the game out to well against Freo which could be a postitive given we start well again. Both the Bombers and Hawks have tried to steam roll us the past two last quarters.

Wouldn't mind seeing a couple more youngsters given a run. Grigg and Edwards sound promising in the Bullants reports.

Can't wait. It's just good to have the footy back on. And it's great to see our kids developing. Oh yeah, a few wins is okay too.

I reckon if we win the NAB Cup we should extend Pagan's contract, before someone pinches him from us. :lol:

A ridiculous long shot, but remember the guy that put his money on a Brisbane hat-trick? Everyone at the TAB that day must have pissed themselves laughing.
Seriously though, with the young group coming through all showing some class now, plus the fact we still have some up our sleeve (Grigg, Hampson, Edwards, Blackwell, Hartlett? Bower, Benjamin, Anderson, etc) we will be a good bet in the next few years regardless of whether or not we win this NAB Cup campaign.

I believe Gibbs should go back to the two's and be given a full game. I would also consider giving Saddington a full game in the seconds. Lappin and Whitnall have had minimal impact in the games to date but our coach won't put them back two's.

The players to be considered for elevation should be Bower, Blackwell, Edwards, Grigg and Hartlett.

If Saddo is going to be given a full match then he should stay in but if he's only going to be given 20 mins then I'd rather see bower get it and Saddo get some match fitness for the ants

Looking forward to seeing Lachy Hansen in action and curious as to where he lines up.

I think he'll be thrown forward as part of an explosive attack before being thrown on Fev as the third or fourth option.

Impressed with his immediate impact, even if it's only the NAB cup.

North's smalls will provide a headache for us, expect to see Anderson in the team.

Hasnt got a lot of the footy or done anything special but what he has done has been class apart from one rushed kick. He only needs to pick up the pace of the game more and he will start producing.

Watched the Kangas vs Dockers game and the Kangas are playing some attacking footy and trying to kick a few more goals.
They have picked up some sneaky goalkickers in Thomas, Campbell and Whyman and are relying less on Thompson. A player like Heath Scotland will need to be accountable this week....
Lachlen Hansen did ok vs Freo...moves well and has a strong pair of hands....
Sansbury, Sinclair and Gibson gave them plenty of run out of the backline but they relied heavily on Archer to shore up what is a rubbery defense.
I would expect Fev to kick a few on Watt or Firrito, and I think we can kick a reasonable score....its whats happening down the other end and in the middle which will determine the game.
I think we can win this game providing we go with a more mobile lineup and some close checking on their key players.

re: Bentick.....needs to stay in the team and will be better for the run and education he got from Mitchell last game..Good players rebound and he will have a good one this week if given the chance......

This is a good point. I thought Murphy appeared to be struggling in his NAB Cup game last year, but once the season started he'd adjusted.

Unless we capitalize on a good start like we didn't with Essendon*, we will be run over the top of by a far more advanced-in-their-training Kangaroos in the last half.

Wouldn't be happy with anything less than a 6 goal margin in our favour at half time.

I watched the Kangaroos v Dockers game yesterday and was impressed with their ball movement. Initially employing a double-flood squeeze on the Dockers in the first half, the Kangaroos were able to force the Dockers to go long to Pavlich on a 1 on 2 situation (Pavlich ably held by Firrito) and yet still have a ground runner to take the ball and clear it.

Some of their defensive clearances were highly skilled and the transition to their forward line was something to watch. With a new spread of indigenous runners right through the lines including Gibson, Thomas, Wells, Campbell and Whyman, they continually ran the ball forward.

With so many new runners both Grant and Harvey were able to play bit parts out wide, increasing their effectiveness.

Their big players (Hansen excluded) are still the same as last year but fed by an improved mifdield they had more and more opportunity. Seems they have given up on Watt in the last line of defence but his run from half back created opportunities in the second half.

Carlton will need to mind their runners. We could exploit the short-stuff nature of their runners with some longer kicking (our midfield is becoming taller all the time although Stevens and Houlihan are not great above their heads) but overall I think we will need to change the balance of our team for the Kangaroos.

Bower is a must as he can play on all types. Add one of Anderson, Edwards or Grigg.
