It's good to see the standard of sports journalism is just as high in Ireland as it is in Australia.

This sounds like wishful thinking.

Replace the name "Setanta O'hAilpin" with "Brendan Goddard" and you could post this story on a Carlton Website Forum and it will go 10 pages.

Sounds like the yearly "Stephen Kernahan to return to SA to Captain the Crows" reports in the Hun from the early 90's.

If it was a profesional sport over there then Setanta & Thadg would be on the next flight home, i'll promise you that!

I have no doubt in my mind that Setanta would be constantly thinking about playing for Cork again,.......................but not yet!

Surely not, after all this time and his progression, he would not give it all up. Can sometime do one of those 10 minute interviews with him and ask him please. This Thread is too stressfull to contemplate............

It would have gone something like this...

Journo: "So Setanta, are you stil interested in playing for Cork again one day".

Setanta: "Oh ye, that would be grand, diddly dee diddly dee"

Journo: "When is your Carlton contract up?"

Setanta: "I'm into the last year of my first contract"

Journo: "So your contract is up at the end of the year?"

Setanta: "Aye, that's right"

Journo: "Thanks Setanta, got my story now"... "Hey boss - Setanta will be back playing for Cork in 2008! His contract is finished this year and he wants to return!"

For anybody who watched last weeks game on TV...................

Just after Houlihan turned the ball over which resulted in a goal in the dying stages of the last quater, when everybody was heading back to the centre for the bounce,.........................Did you see the look on Setanta's face as he was SCREAMING for his players to lift. It was scarey stuff.

I've taken a snapshot of it but am not sure how to post it on this site. But Damn, the look on his face and the determination in his eyes is not that of a guy who's gonna give up at the end of the year!

Very accurate Hammer. Just got Echo now. Some quotes to please ye lot
"one of my major motivations to succeed is to prove the narrow minded people wrong"

Homesickness
"There were nights when i'd lie awake 2 or 3 in the morning wondering whether i had made the right decision. The biggest step to overcoming my homesickness was when Carlton signed Aisake. Oh man, they dont realize how much of an influence he has had on me fropm the first minute he arrived,"

On Aisake
"They're grooming him for the ruck which is a much better positiontha mine. Hopefully by the end of the year he'll get a crack"

I noticed that straight away ryan. Everyone was all hands on hips and looking at the ground and there was Santy revving the lads up and trying to get them going. This bloke’s got character and looks the type you’d want to go into battle with. Setanta is flowering great!

I am surprised that he devalues the position in defence. I certainly don’t see it as subordinate to the rucks and KP defenders are held in very high esteem (SOS, Scarlett and yes even Michael in his prime). And Carlos has the attributes and dimensions to be a star in this role. Maybe it was quoted verbatim or maybe not but that quote doesn’t come across as something Carlos might say.

One thing that will draw him back home earlier is his relationship with his family, especially his mum

Marci I think the statement re his position is more that Setanta loves attacking and running with the ball, and being totally defensive is against his nature. But I am also sure he will make a go of it. I would see him playing full back this year, developing his defensive skills, and further developing his footy skills and then moving to CHB where he can give reign to his great attacking flair and maybe in the future a run at CHF. Full back is I think is just about the toughest position. Your oppponent gets 5 kicks and you've had five kicked on you. It's a bit like being goalkeeper in soccer, one concentration lapse and you are blamed for losing the game. In the long run it will be great benefit to his game tho.

In time someone like Flint might develop as a dour defensive player. I like the idea of a future half back line of Bower Setanta and Walks, charging out of defence.

Setanta came here to pursue his dream of playing in a "professional" sport.
His professionalism and passion will not let him leave a job half done.

His progress at the top level of a foreign sport continues to amaze me.

It warms the heart to think he's at Carlton for the duration.

Would love to see Setanta make it at either FB or CHB and play the position like David Dench did for North Melbourne in the 70s (only better 8) ).

Can't stand David Dench as a person - a real turd, but was good full back.

I missed it - but that kind of hunger is absolute gold. That has leadership written all over it. If his footy continues to improve at the same rate he may well lead this team one day...

I also noticed him in the background, I turned to my wife who doesn't follow footy and said 'look at this poor guy, he wants to win so badly it could break your hear' - she understood exactly what I meant

I'd be dismayed if Setanta up & left us. He's just starting to settle into the senior team it seems and looked really solid last week.

Whoever our new footy manager is should extend his contract!
