Hello, I am Leonard Nemoy and today we are 'In Search Of ......."

The Mysterious Deleted Channel Seven Video Tapes

Channel Seven made the unfortunate decision to delete from their archives many games from the 1970's and 80's. This was of course a time of great success for the Blues and as a consequence many great Carlton wins are no longer available to be enjoyed.

We at the Blueseum are asking you to search your old video tapes, whether they are VHS or Betamax to see if we can find some of these lost gems. In general we are looking for anything before 1987 but in particular games such as the 1979 finals excluding the Grand Final, the 1981 second semi final, the 1970 second semi final and the 1986 final versus Sydney.

So please search your old video tapes and if you have this item please contact us via this page.

If anything is found we will firstly give a copy of the tapes to the Carlton Football Club and also Channel Seven to restore the lost archive.

This is probably a daft question, but presumably if Channel 7 stuffed this up, Name-A-Game is not an option???

Yep, they actually deleted the games from their archives.

No way to get them back unless someone out there somewhere taped them.

Did not know this until Miles Wilks who is a regular article contributor to Inside Carlton and occasionaly on the website let me know about this situation.

There was also a night grand final we won in the 80s that you can't get at Name-a-Game that would be great to have somewhere. It's also the kind of game that lots of Blues supporters must have taped at the time.

Jars
I have some tapes from the Channel 7 Footy Marathons.
Most are only 1 quarter, and possibly of Grand Finals.

Had a quick look, and have the last quarter of the 1976 prelim Final
against North Melbourne.
I will have to go through them to see what the rest are.

There seems to still be some of the matches available via the "Name-a-game" series through Australian Football Video.

http://www.sportsdelivered.com/afl/nag_print.asp

I still have to get in touch with them as well and get a copy of the 1999 Preliminary Final against Essendon*, best match I have ever seen Carlton play and win - EVER.

Yet another reason why FTA TV channels are the biggest pack of arseholes ever to grace this planet.

Disgraceful!

Thanks for that list Sticks.

From that we know that the only (non grandfinal) Carlton games available pre-1987 are:

1968 Second Semi Final Carlton def Essendon* (68-DSS)
1970 Preliminary Final 1 Carlton def St. Kilda (70-DPF)
1972 Preliminary Final 1 Carlton def St. Kilda (72-DPF)
1976 Preliminary Final 1 Kangaroos def Carlton (76-DPF)
1981 Night Grand Final Essendon* def Carlton (81-DNGF)
1985 Elimination Final 1 Kangaroos def Carlton (85-DEF)

Therefore if anyone has any Carlton game on tape APART from those above, you would be doing the football world a huge service by letting us know about it so we can get them to the club and the original copyright holders Ch 7.

That's what I reckon.

Disgusting action by a disgusting organisation.

Damn when did they do this? 87 when they gave up the rights?

I wouldn't think many people would have had video recorders in those days, would they?

Not sure when the deletions were made, but your suggestion makes sense.

About 1980 VCR's started to become popular and more common in Australia.

It is still a long shot though that much has survived.

Have you spoken to Fullmont about this Jars?

My tip is he might have some footage - not sure if it's pre 87 though.

Yeah, talked to him on Saturday night about that. Hopefully he should be able to provide some tapes of 1986 and 1987, which is fantastic. :-D

Slightly off the topic but does Channel 2 still have their entire footy archive? They used to have coverage as well. Would they have entire games on tape?? They did the coverage in 1987 from memory (or was that via sportsplay/powerplay??) Maybe they still have some quarters (hopefully some glorious 'premiership' carlton 3rd quarters?)

I guess Ch 7 would not be able to use those but still something worth thinking about.

Ahh Ch 2 a pleasent Sunday morning and other footy replays over the weekend. Glory days. Why don't they have shows like that now.....

Oh yeah MONEY AND GREEDY AFL.

Jars I'll have a quick look tonight, may have some games from 1986, I think I have Carlton v Richmond at Waverley - possibly highlights also from the 86 final - when Fraser Murphy volleyed a goal to give us the win.

Thats a good thought
ABC did cover the games in full for The Winners program. The club could appraoch them.
flower channel 7.

The other thing is ex players and their familes would have footage. Past players assoc would be worth trying.

Relying o people video tapes isnt a great option cos Ch 7 only ever showed highlights or single quarters
