Guess that's why they call them the Blues Quote: "At Carlton, there's always been a little bit of arrogance . . . that got out of hand in the '80s and '90s and people lost their way," says Diggins. "There's a strength in arrogance but a weakness when that arrogance means you lose your way. The arrogance stopped the club reassessing itself and realising it was in a slide."

"There's a photograph of Sir Robert Menzies watching a Carlton game while sitting in a Rolls Royce on a special platform. It's an image that shows how long the club has enjoyed its silvertail powerbase. It seems, like the 1995 premiership, a long time ago." Anyone got this photo???? |

I don't have acopy of the photo but I can confirm it as I saw it. His chaffeur used to drive up between the George Harris and Heatley stands. Like at the country footy - not that you see many Rollers (or was it a Bentley) on the fence at Watchem-Corack. |

Faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrk!!!!! Who wrote this crap? There is no name attributed to it? Why does Elliot still get a free run from the media? I get so pissed off with this crap. If they're going to dredge this prick up to allow him to put his 2 bobs worth in could they at least hold him a little bit accountable for our current plight instead of just allowing him to give his side. |

Elliot is 20 years of Carlton football history. What do you mean he shouldnt comment? |

If anything I love this stuff because it reminds everyone of the rivalry that currently we can't live up to. I think in a few years time when we're back on our feet we'll have heaps of ammunition - along the lines of 'well, we've been gone for a while and what the hell have you achieved....another 6th placing?' |

Elliot may be the only Carlton man to know the whole Carlton story of the 80's and 90's, so do you blame the media for asking him a few questions about the Carlton journey? Elliot is passionate about the club but unfortunately really stuffed up...he hasn't been given the opportunity to redeem himself, so suggesting that he has nothing to offer Carlton is an arrogant action in itself. Live and let live. We will be back!!! |

I think this is the best interview Diggins has ever done. A Pity it wasn't done a few weeks ago. |

Simply put - that whole article equates to the reason why opposition supporters hate us with such a passion. The article quoted: "Essendon* and Melbourne dealt with their (rorting charges) but Carlton snubbed its nose at the AFL and said, 'Not us'. Oh yeah, I'm sure Essendon* really struggled with their monstrous $80,000 'slap on the wrist' fine... I wonder is Ron Evans was part of the AFL commission when that fine was delivered... ![]() In regards to Elliott, although I can't forgive him for the past *and never will* - I admired the man for his arrogance when he was at the club, and to an extent his 'success at all costs' attitude *which really helped the club and his businesses ![]() ![]() |

Yes I remember that - and I do recall the photo in one of the papers, it would have been in the early to mid-70s when Menzies was quite infirm by that stage. If I recall they moved the platform he use to park on a few years later and put it in front of the Heatley Stand for the Carlton Bluebirds. ![]() |

![]() Yes but he was also President of Essendon* at the time of their rorting - however the next President of Essendon* (David Shaw) took the responsibility for it so as not too put Evans into such an embarrassing situation. ![]() |

This AGE article was written by Peter Wilmoth; a long standing Melbourne writer. AGRO and I were talking about Sir Robert Menzies and his limo being parked next to the Heatley Stand in my "Warby's Scrapbook" thread the other day. |

FWIW....I've just done a quick look; and Carlton; under John Elliott, played in 34 Finals Matches for 2 premierships.....not too shabby. |

Elliot is passionate about the club but unfortunately really stuffed up...he hasn't been given the opportunity to redeem himself, so suggesting that he has nothing to offer Carlton is an arrogant action in itself. Live and let live. We will be back!!! The thing I thinks irks most people is not only the obvious in what he did to the club, but his lack of remorse and contrition. I don't buy that he hasn't had a chance to redeem himself. He could easily at any time, take responsibilty for his actions, but he refuses to do so. Yes we had some great success under him, but his style had a limited shelf life in the new era of the AFL (drafts, salary caps etc). If he was willing accept some responsibility, then I would be more willing to acknowledge some of his success. |

I've got the picture of Robert Menzies in his Rolls watching a Carlton game. It's up on my wall as part of the souvenir poster of the last game at Optus. There's a picture of the oval and several memorable events that took place at the ground and in which spot on the ground. |

Not doubting you pj; but I've just gone over that same poster about 10 times; and it's not there.....and there's no mention of it either. |

Essendon* didnt deal with shi t. Anybody here who tells me Stage Diver Lloyd was intelligent enough to set hius own website and extort his own club as a legitimate ![]() The AFL hated our perceived arrogance and saw it as an opportunity to stick a knife into us. I cannot as a reasonably educated person believe for one minute that we were the only club to rort the system, but the cauliflower sure made an example of us. I may not agree with Sticks timing of his outburst given our precarious situation but I agree with his sentiments and God help anyone who gets in our way on the field in the next few years because as these kids grow in confidence they are going to really want to even the score and stick it up all the critics and pricks who they have had to endure. |
