Post subject:  Blues recruited because of games against us...

Hi All

Hoping to pick your brains for a Blueseum article, focussing on players that we've recruited because they annihilated us in a game or series of games.

A few come to mind:

* Brent Heaver, 5 goals for Melbourne

* Sean Charles, that 1994 final

* Mick McGuane, every freaking time.

Any thoughts? If you can come up with any, please add a specific game or 2 that probably saw the Blues take interest.

Thanks

M

- Stephen Easton
- Frank Marchesani

We're talking late 70s early 80s - I will have to research the games.

Easton took a mark and kicked a goal late in a game for North Melbourne to beat us at Princes Park.

Marchesani tore us a new one in his first season at Fitzroy (kicked 4 goals I think). I think we were always going to try and recruit him anyway because his uncle was a big sponsor of Carlton at the time and he had other 'family' ties with Carlton (of the Fat Tony kind :P ).

Mick Mansfield - but only when he was actually playing for Carlton (usually the 19th man for the opposition). 8)

He escorted Brad Pearce to the ball magnificently in the 1995 Grand Final.

Adrian Hickmont was I thought Geelong's toughest and better performed players whilst he was on the field for them in the 95 Grand Final - and all the Carlton Players recommended we recruit him.

Billy Barrot came to us in 1971, I think.

Richmond and St. Kilda came to a deal where Ian Stewart and Barrot swapped clubs.

A few games into that season - Barrot walked out on St. Kilda and then St. Kilda cleared him to us.

Barrot basically won the 1969 Grand Final for Richmond against us - when he was shifted from the Centre to Full Forward and kicked 4 goals - Wes Lofts couldn't handle him.

This sort of club movement would be impossible today under the current player movement rules.

I remember Col Kinnear mentioning Earl Spalding used to destroy us.

Peter McKenna - we often ended up with former enemies at the club when their best was behind them. I had an endless dream that we would get Daicos at some stage.

There was a lot of talk and rumour about getting Daicos in the early to mid-80s.

As for other players past their prime:

- Brownlow Medalist - Peter Bedford

- David Clarke (Senior) from Geelong - we also recruited David Clarke Junior at his prime.

O'Reilly used to have the wood on Sticks

Mansfield was usually ok against us.

Nick Stevens was BOG a couple of times against us.

Daicos was VERY keen to come to Carlton at 1 point, closer than you'll ever know.

You are spot on with Marchesani.....played on Bruce Doull from memory and destroyed him with pace...

Greg Williams use to tear Carlton apart with his football and physical presence when he was at the Swans.

This reminds me.....
Rhys-Jones was a fearsome opponent.

One superstar player who I never remember tearing us apart was Wayne Carey.

SOS would always nullify Carey as far as I can recall, and even create and rebound off him.

Carey is lower in my estimation of him as a player because of this.

As I mentioned he was one our better players in the 95 Grand Final - gave Brad Pearce an armchair ride to the ball as I recall.
