Don't know what got me thinking about this - but I was pondering the other day with a few mates at the pub about Carlton's best second-hand player since 1990... somebody who has been given more than a start at a previous club (or two) - at least say, 2 seasons and has for whatever reason been traded/poached/recycled to the Blues.

I was arguing the case for 2 hardnuts who happened to play in '95 GF - albeit for different sides (thanks keyser!), Williams and Hickmott... one a slow bastard with a savage handball and 2 (should be 3!) Brownlows under his belt, and the other a savage combination of the determination of Paul Kelly (the footballer!) and the courage of Glenn Archer. Both weren't a bad kick for goal either!

Any others worthy nominations who landed on Carlton's doorstep?

No arguments about Williams but whether he was a real "second hand" player is debatable. When you're talking a second hand player for mine you're talking about a rejected player that turned into solid gold.

Under that criterion I'd like to give the nod to Brad Pearce who was absolutely pivotal to our 1995 success. I can remember spending the whole of 1995 saying "Who the hell is Brad Pearce?????" as he kicked yet another crucial goal.

You are talking about different situations when a player is traded, such as Williams or Hickmott, to when he is discared by his former club and then drafted.

I'd have to think Dean Rice would be our best recycled pick up from the draft. Close behind would be Glen Manton.

Sorry guys when I refer to second-hand - I'm basically saying the person played for a previous club, and came to our club under any capacity... traded, discarded and drafted and so on...

...I was wondering about the criteria myself, at the pub we initially argued on retreads/recycled players... then any play who came to our club from a previous club...

How long was Justin Madden at Essendon* before he came to the Blues? *got his bio in the lounge but can't be arsed checking!*

But for mine, the number one retread has to be Jim Francis (captain, Best & Fairest, 1938 Premiership player, senior coach, Hall of Fame).

Harry came from the Bombers for the 1983 season after 45 games there - don't ask how I remember that but I know it's a fact.

I tend to think that the criteria of 'discarded player' is the more interesting one. Sure we got Williams and he was a champ, but it didn't take any particular wisdom to secure him, just money and the chance to win a flag.
